EPIC final day digging the Green River Formation!!!

- Spent an AWESOME week hanging out with our buddy Tony digging 53 Million year old fossils and filming some GREAT Educational Shorts for our YouTube Channel "Chasing History"

- This formation is made up of an Ancient Extinct lake system called Fossil Lake. 53 million years ago a GIANT inland lake existed in what is now part of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah, but what makes this like unique is that the bottom layer of the lake was an oxygen free zone which means that when anything died in that Lake and it floated to the bottom predators could not scavenge it nor could bacteria break it down, allowing sediment to slowly cover up whatever fell to the bottom creating one of the most incredible fossil beds anywhere in the world.

- The story of the ecosystem of this ancient Fossil Lake is incredibly complete but there are still new discoveries being made almost every year due to the commercial paleontology that is being done! This formation is such a great example of why commercial paleontology is a benefit to science. But what really makes this a unique sight is because the fossils are so abundant that it allows the average person to collect a really cool fossil very affordably. You shouldn't have to have a million dollars to have an epic fossil in your collection. $10 will get you a decent fish, $20 a really nice one. And it's their collecting these fossils that inspires the next generation.

- We've got a ton of great stuff for our fossil fish frames and a lot of great footage but the best part was getting to hang out with our buddy Tony!! it sucks but all of our favorite people have to live on the other side of the damn country... lol 😆 🤣

- Packed and loaded for our next and final adventure for the summer.

We're off to Northern Colorado to dig for hematite quartz crystals and to film a new documentary on the geology of Red Feather Colorado and the crystals there.

Oooooooooo... This is going to be AWESOME!!!!

EPIC weekend up in Wyoming, hanging out, digging fossil for the shop and filming some shorts for Chasing History!!!

- It's been a BUSY weekend.... but we got to do a little night fishing..... lol.... (my kind of fishing). Due to the nature of the rock the fossils are locked in, one technique of getting the fossils out is doing it in large layers, where during the day you split a large sheet exposing one level and wait until dark where you can use lanterns to find the fossils. Sounds CRAZY... but it very effective. By controlling the direction of the light source you can see subtleties in the rock that allow you to spot more fossils than you would during the day.
It's REALLY genius.... and fun to beat the heat by digging at night!!!

- We have also split and picked up over 1,000 mini fish from a mass extinction layer for our Chasing History Fossil Frame sets!!! as well as filmed a LOT of Great Educational Shorts our YouTube Channel "Chasing History" Look for those Coming Soon!!!!

Wrapping up the Wyoming part of the summer adventure, just a day or so then back on the road!!!... where will the road take us Next??

Digging Fossil Fish with our buddy Tony in the wilds of Wyoming!!!

- One of the things that the Smoky Mountain Relic Room sells a lot of is fossil fish from the Green River formation in Wyoming. And we needed a bunch of mini fish from the mass mortality layer for our Chasing History frame sets, so we had some digging to do!!

- the Green River formation is one of the most incredible fossil bearing formations or layers of Earth anywhere on the planet. This ancient lake existed a little more than 50 million years ago. What makes this lake unique is that the bottom of the lake had an oxygen free zone which means that anything that died within the lake once it's settled to the bottom bacteria and other predators could not eat it, allowing fine sediment from the surrounding mountain ranges to slowly cover them up. As the Rocky Mountain uplift continued the lake dried out and erosion started cutting channels down into this ancient lake bed where millions of years later a history nerd like us and our buddy Tony can come dig some epic fossils!!!

- We filmed a lot of great educational shorts for Chasing History that we will be sharing here as well so look forward to those

- We are having more fun than should be allowed lol, and we needed a good hang out!!! We are just getting started and we've got a lot more digging in Wyoming ahead!

Pallets are packed!! All kinds of AWESOME history is bound for the Smoky Mountain Relic Room and The Smoky Mountain Antique Mall!
- Everything we have dug up and bought along this trip is loaded onto these pallets headed to the warehouse where it will be unpacked, priced and put out for you guys to collect at the shop. THERE'S SO MUCH AWESOMENESS!!

- It feels GREAT to get all that weight off the truck!!! The Tundrasaur is happy she can continue with a lighter pack lol

- HUGE thanks to our buddy Tyree Lamph for letting up build and ship from his shop. If you guys come through the Salt Lake Valley, stop into American Fork Utah and check out his shop Utah Dump Digger. It is THE BEST rock shop in Utah!!! Killer stuff and worth a visit. Tell them we sent ya!! Be sure to ask about the free Pocket Fries 😄 🤣 😂 😆..... seriously.... do ask... 😄 🤣 😂 😆 😄

- We are off to our next dig. Headed to Southwest Wyoming to our buddy Tonys Quarry to hang out and dig some Fossil Fish for the shop and frame sets!!!! The winds of Wyoming are calling!!!
