We sell a lot of Sun Drop / Twigs soda in our shop and share their story every chance we get. 💚💛
Sun Drop wasn't invented in Wisconsin, but a small family bottling company in Shawano has spent more than seventy years keeping it alive there in a way barely anyone else in the country still does. Twig's Beverage was started in the early 1950s by Floyd Hartwig, a Korean War veteran who came home shot through both knees and unsure what to do next with his life. His nickname, Twig, became the name of the business he decided to build instead, mixing early batches of soda by hand in an old tub using nothing more than an ax handle.
The soda itself came from Missouri, developed by a beverage concentrate salesman named Charles Lazier, who was originally marketing it as more of a golden cola style lemonade before it became the citrus soda people know today. In 1953, Lazier reached out to Floyd Hartwig directly and asked if he'd be willing to bottle and distribute Sun Drop up in northeastern Wisconsin. Floyd said yes, and it quickly became the company's most popular product, a status it's never really lost in the decades since.
Sun Drop eventually got picked up by bigger players, first Crush International, then Procter & Gamble, then Cadbury Schweppes, and today Keurig Dr Pepper owns the brand outright and produces it through multiple bottlers nationwide. But Twig's has held onto something none of those larger companies bothered to keep, actual returnable glass bottles. Every bottle that leaves the Shawano plant goes through sterilization, filling, and hands-on quality inspection the same way it always has, and Twig's remains the last Sun Drop bottler in the world still using that older, reusable glass system, with some loyal customers reportedly having the same bottles refilled again and again over years or even decades.
The Hartwig family has stayed hands-on the entire way through. Floyd's son Dan bought the business from his father in 1986, and Dan's own sons Ben and Jake now help run daily operations, giving Twig's three generations of the same family behind the same soda. Locals in Shawano treat Sun Drop almost like a loyalty test, with Ben Hartwig noting that if a restaurant or bar table doesn't have a Sun Drop bottle sitting on it, there's a good chance the people there aren't actually from around here.
Nobody at Twig's pretends they invented the drink, and they're upfront about that fact even while giving tours through their small on-site museum showing the whole bottling process start to finish. What they've built instead is something arguably rarer than invention, a stubborn, deeply local commitment to keeping a nearly seventy five year old soda tradition running in glass, in Shawano, exactly the way it always has been.
