Hello, my name is Bertha. Please let me tell you about myself. My earliest recollection began at the Kansas City Art Institute. I have fond memories of the students there. Sample gamps and experemental students eager to ply their fibers on my frame. Those were good ole days. Alas my days there were numbered as those same students so tenative at first, now looked for biger and better ways to express themselves. More shafts they cried more treadles and my 4 shafts and 10 treadles were just not enough for those young artist. I wonder if I'll ever see them again?
I have been told though that I was loving made in Michigan in the mid 70s. ( I have no recollection.) Some wood artist made me to endure. Strong maple, mortise and tenon joinery provides me with the ability to hold my castle high. This also enables me to provide an excellent shed. Brass ratchets and pawl provides wonderful tension to many project.
After my tenure at the school, I was loving brought to a home nearby and cherished for my strong frame and delicate movements. So much so that I was never even used there. Just lovingly dusted and cared for in this tranquil home.
From there I traveled, boy that was a scary day. Strapped to the roof of the trailblazer. I made my way north to Iowa. There with my current mistress I have been brought along for several different locations. My owner has always displayed me with pride, almost felt like one of the family. Thus my name Bertha. Many projects have flowed from my warp beam thru countless heddles and of course my reed/beaterbar. Blankets, scarfs and other countless rugs.
With all this musing I have discovered that I am to be shared, so that my joy of producing handwoven products can be enjoyed. Not only the joy of the weaving process but also in my ability to produce a large array of gifts or my ability to produce items for retail therapy, thus spreading even more joy.
I've been told by my current guardian that my situation needs to change to once again make others happy. Please contact my owner at [email protected] for further details. Thanks for taking time to read my story. Happy weaving to you.
