Prefinished engineered flooring is a multi-billion dollar business — but there are a few facts about it that rarely get mentioned. 🤔

Here's a little write-up on the differences between prefinished and unfinished flooring, and why unfinished, site-finished floors make a lot more sense in many cases. From how each handles water and pet accidents, to why that "perfect color match" is harder to find than you'd think.

Why Wide Plank Solid Hardwood Is Rarely Recommended (And What Most People Don't Know)
If you've ever shopped for hardwood flooring, you've probably heard something like this:

"I'd stay away from wide-plank solid hardwood."

Or...

"You should probably go with engineered if you want wide boards."

Most people hear that and assume wide planks are somehow inferior.

They're not.

The real issue is movement.

Wood is alive... well, not literally, but it still reacts to the world around it.

As the humidity goes up, wood absorbs moisture and expands.

As the air dries out, it gives that moisture back and shrinks.

Every hardwood floor does it.

Here's what most people don't realize.

A 3-inch board doesn't have very far to move.

An 11-inch board does.

The wider the board, the more noticeable that natural movement becomes.

That's why installers have traditionally been cautious about wide-plank solid hardwood.

It's not because they don't love the look.

It's because they don't want callbacks.

Over the years, the flooring industry found a solution.

Engineered hardwood.

By crossing layers of wood in different directions, engineered flooring reduces movement and makes wider planks possible in more homes.

It's a great product, and there's a reason it's become so popular.

But what if you still wanted real 3/4-inch solid hardwood?

That's where Thermawood changes the conversation.

Using only heat and steam, Thermawood permanently changes the wood itself.

The process removes much of the organic material that causes wood to react so dramatically to moisture changes.

The result is a solid hardwood floor that's far more dimensionally stable than traditional hardwood.

That doesn't mean wood never moves.

Every piece of real wood will move a little.

Anyone who tells you otherwise isn't being honest.

But reducing that movement changes what's possible.

It opens the door to wider planks, longer lengths, concrete slabs, radiant heat, bathrooms, and other applications where traditional solid hardwood has often been avoided.

At the end of the day, wide-plank hardwood was never the problem.

Movement was.

And once you understand that, you start looking at hardwood flooring a little differently.

Maybe We've Been Looking At Bathrooms All Wrong

After more than 40 years in the flooring and remodeling industry, I've watched bathroom design evolve dramatically. Today's bathrooms are more beautiful than ever, but somewhere along the way they also lost a little of that laid-back, relaxing feel.

Living in modern times, it seems almost everything revolves around waterproofing and hard surfaces. And to be fair, some of the most beautifully designed bathrooms I've ever seen and worked on are absolutely stunning.

Yet they always seemed like they were missing something.

Oddly enough, I think European spas put their finger on it years ago.

Wood.

Not because it was trendy. Not because it was the latest design idea. They simply understood how a room should feel. Warm. Comfortable. Inviting. A place to slow down and enjoy the moment.

For decades we've been told that real wood simply wasn't an option in wet areas, so we stopped thinking about it.

And honestly, I didn't put all of this together until I started working with Thermawood. It didn't just introduce me to a different flooring product, it opened the door to a different way of thinking. One where real wood could once again be used in places that have long been dominated by tile, stone, and other hard surfaces.

As I watch today's homes, I'm seeing people move back toward warmth and character. Flooring where every board isn't identical. Homes that feel natural instead of manufactured. Spaces that feel welcoming the moment you walk through the door.

Maybe that's what we've been missing.

A bathroom that feels less like a bathroom and a little more like the place in the house where you actually want to slow down for a while.

We think it's about time we looked at real wood again. Not just for its beauty, but for its ability to make a house feel more like a home.

While bathrooms may be what started this conversation, it's only part of the story. Thermawood-USA also offers real solid hardwood flooring designed for applications that were once considered off limits, including installation directly over concrete slabs and radiant heat systems. Available in Red Oak, White Oak, and Antique Heart Pine, with impressive 12–16 foot lengths and widths from 7–10 inches, it's another example of how real wood is finding its way back into places many of us never thought possible.

The Wood That Will Change the Building Industry

Tired of selling the same flooring every other swinging hammer sells?

Imagine an 11" wide solid hardwood floor that runs from showers (yea… showers), straight through the home and out to decks and docks.

Now imagine it’s already a $1.4B market most builders still haven’t heard of.

See where this is going?
