William H. Pitsenbarger, commonly known as "Pits," was an Air Force Pararescueman who demonstrated remarkable valor during the Vietnam War. Serving as a medic, Pitsenbarger selflessly risked his life to save countless soldiers on April 11, 1966, during the Battle of Xa Cam My.
As the battle raged on, Pitsenbarger volunteered to be lowered from a helicopter into the intense combat zone.
Despite facing heavy enemy fire, he tirelessly treated and evacuated wounded soldiers. Displaying unwavering courage and compassion, Pitsenbarger refused to leave the battlefield until every injured individual had been rescued.
In a pivotal moment, Pitsenbarger made a critical decision to stay behind with a group of critically wounded soldiers, knowing the risks involved. This choice ultimately cost him his life, as he succumbed to enemy fire. However, his actions saved the lives of nine men who were able to be evacuated to safety.
For his exceptional bravery and sacrifice, William H. Pitsenbarger was posthumously awarded the Air Force Cross, the second-highest military decoration for valor.
