Here are a few facts about the LCM 3:

-The U.S. WWII LCM(3) stood for “Landing Craft, Mechanized Mark 3” and was designed to transport tanks, vehicles, and troops directly onto beaches during amphibious assaults.
-The LCM(3) was developed from earlier landing craft designs and became one of the most widely used mechanized landing craft of World War II.
-It was approximately 50 feet long and built with a shallow draft, allowing it to operate close to shore in difficult coastal waters.
-The craft could carry a 30-ton load, including vehicles such as the M4 Sherman tank, trucks, artillery pieces, or around 60 troops.
-Power came from two diesel engines, giving the LCM(3) a top speed of roughly 8 knots depending on load and sea conditions.
-A large front bow ramp allowed vehicles and soldiers to quickly unload directly onto enemy beaches during invasions.
-The LCM(3) played a major role in famous amphibious operations including the Normandy Landings, Pacific island assaults, and Mediterranean campaigns.
-The vessel’s armored wheelhouse and steel hull offered limited protection against small arms fire and battlefield hazards.
-Thousands of LCM(3)s were produced by American shipyards during the war because of their simple, rugged, and highly effective design.
-After World War II, many surviving LCM(3)s continued serving with the U.S. military and allied nations for decades in transport and riverine operations.

The French battleship Bretagne was the lead ship of the Bretagne-class dreadnought battleships built for the French Navy before World War I. Commissioned in 1915, Bretagne represented France’s effort to modernize its fleet during the naval arms race of the early twentieth century. The ship displaced over 23,000 tons and was armed with ten powerful 340mm main guns mounted in five twin turrets. It also carried numerous secondary guns and anti-aircraft weapons, making it a formidable warship for its time.

During World War I, Bretagne mainly served with the French Mediterranean Fleet, helping contain the Austro-Hungarian Navy in the Adriatic Sea. Although it saw limited direct combat, the battleship played an important strategic role in maintaining Allied naval superiority in the Mediterranean.

By the beginning of World War II, Bretagne was considered outdated compared to newer battleships, but it still served in the French fleet. Its career came to a tragic end on July 3, 1940, during the British attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir in Algeria. Fearing the ships might fall into German hands after France’s surrender, British forces opened fire. Bretagne exploded after being hit and quickly sank, with heavy loss of life among its crew.
