HBCU WEEK SPOTLIGHT:
Jackson State University is a historically Black research university in Mississippi known for its iconic marching band, rich legacy, and academic milestones.

- Founded in 1877: The school started as the Natchez Seminary in Natchez, Mississippi, with an initial class of 20 formerly enslaved men training to be ministers and teachers.

- Seven Name Changes: Over its history, the institution underwent seven name changes, including Jackson College and Jackson State College, before officially becoming Jackson State University in 1974.

- Historic Building: The original seminary was housed in a former United States Marine Hospital. Its oldest current campus building, Ayer Hall (built in 1903), is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

-The Sonic Boom of the South: JSU is home to this legendary, high-energy precision marching band, which has performed at major NFL halftime shows and national television specials.

- Thee I Love: This phrase serves as the beloved motto and welcoming anthem for the university community.

- Urban University Designation: The state officially designated JSU as the Urban University of Mississippi for its focus on public service and community solutions.
