I’ve been spending a lot of time collecting and processing seed the past two weeks! I’m ready for the temps to come down, and for us to receive some rain. This summer has been very hot and dry. Not the best weather for propagating young plants!

All that being said, I do have some good looking plants in stock, and I’ve sown a few trays of seed. Fall planting time is right around the corner!

Also, I will be a vendor at the Louisiana Homesteader Conference this year (Oct. 16 & 17) in Bossier Parish. The Conference is being held at the LSU Ag Red River Research Station in Bossier City.

Spent the morning at Briarwood Nature Preserve, grabbed lunch in Natchitoches, and spent the evening in the nursery. Today was a pretty good day!

I’m getting ready to kick it in gear. I have lots of cuttings, plugs, seeds, and pickerelweed to pot up. I have a feeling this fall is going to be busy, but I am ready for it!

We get asked a lot about where to find native plants for sale in Louisiana. On the web page under “Resources,” there are links to many options, but we are going to do a deeper introduction to the native plant sellers through posts over the next few months.

Today, we would like to introduce you to Caddo Native Plant Company.
Caddo Native Plant Company is a backyard nursery owned by Bradley McCollough. He currently does not have a storefront, but your patronage could help him save for one. He will meet in Caddo Parish. Customers can view his live plant availability via Facebook or Instagram. Message him with your plant order, and they will coordinate a delivery.

They grow ArkLaTex native plants. Most of the plant material is grown from seed or cuttings that they collect from various natural areas within the ArkLaTex region.

On top of a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from LSUS, he checks some pretty awesome boxes:
🌱Certified Louisiana Native Professional
🌱Gold Star Habitat Certification with over 145 species of ArkLaTex native plants.

Some species that they currently have in good inventory right now are:
🌸Winecups (Callirhoe involucrata)
🌸Foxglove Penstemon (Penstemon digitalis)
🌸Rudbeckia maxima (Great Coneflower)

They will have a fresh crop of wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) in the fall. 🍓

It’s extremely hot right now, but this time of year is a good time to start thinking about fall planting. Fall is the BEST time to plant perennials, trees, and shrubs. Planting in the fall allows hardy plants to focus on root growth throughout the winter. When native plants go dormant in the winter time, all of their stored energy is used to grow deep & abundant root systems. Winter-time root development allows fall-planted perennials to grow with ease the following spring & summer.

Giant Cane (Arundinaria gigantea) is an awesome ArkLaTex native plant that thrives in shade gardens. When planted in full sun, Giant Cane forms large colonies called “Canebrakes”. These Canebrakes once covered the Eastern United States and served as critical habitat for wildlife (including the Canebrake Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)). Today, less than 1% of these historic Canebrakes remain intact.
