"I had thought it was beyond saving."

That is the sentence we hear most often when a rug with moth damage arrives at the shop. And it is almost never true.

Moths do quiet, invisible work. The adult moths themselves do not eat wool. Their larvae do. The eggs get laid in the dark, still parts of the pile, under furniture, along the fringe, in corners where the rug is rarely disturbed. The larvae feed on the wool fibers from the foundation up. By the time a family notices, there is often a bare patch, a fine dusting of wool debris, or a thin spot where the pile has thinned down to the warp threads. And the assumption is that the rug is finished.

It rarely is.

Mary Ann Glendon brought us three Oriental rugs for care, one with active moth damage in a piece she called much-treasured. Here is her review:

Here is what the project involved:

✔️ Reweaving through the moth-damaged section on the treasured Oriental to close the pile and rebuild the pattern, knot by knot, matched to the original wool color
✔️ Full-immersion hand wash on all three rugs to lift embedded soil and remove any remaining eggs from the foundation
✔️ Moth-proofing treatment on all three rugs to protect against future infestation

A quick note for anyone reading this. If you have a rug that lives under furniture, spends time rolled in storage, or sits in a room that does not get much traffic, take a look at the pile this week. Fine wool dust near the edges, small bare patches, or tiny casings on the underside are the early signs. Caught early, the fix is straightforward. Caught late, it becomes a much larger repair.

The wool is hand-carded, hand-spun, and vegetable-dyed, which is why the color deepens over time instead of fading out. The pattern is one that has been refined across generations of weavers in Persia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, and beyond. When you bring one home, you are not buying a decorative piece.
