Holding The Line: The Third Tennessee Infantry 1861-1864 by Flavel C Barber 1994 Hardcover with Dust Jacket NEW IN WRAP!!

FLAVEL C. BARBER'S memoir of his service with the Third Tennessee provides a rare contemporary history of a Confederate regiment. Major Barber's imprisonment after the surrender of Fort Donelson spurred him to take pen in hand. What began as a way to "while away the tedious hours of imprisonment" on Johnson's Island in Lake Erie became a poignant, candid, yet unsentimental account of the life of a soldier at war. Of special value for Civil War scholars and buffs are Barber's vivid descriptions of battles, notably the siege of Fort Donelson and the Confederate victory at Chickasaw Bayou, in which he highlights the Third Tennessee's crucial role in defeating William T. Sherman. Robert H. Ferrell introduces Barber and details the formation of the regiment. A full regimental roster, a rarity among Confederate units, also is included.

The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II by Jeff Shaara 2008 1st Edition Hardcover with Dust Jacket SIGNED new!

General Dwight Eisenhower commands a diverse army that must destroy Hitler’s European fortress. On the coast of France, German commander Erwin Rommel prepares for the coming invasion, as the Führer thwarts the strategies Rommel knows will succeed. Meanwhile, Sergeant Jesse Adams, a veteran of the 82nd Airborne, parachutes with his men behind German lines. And as the invasion force surges toward the beaches of Normandy, Private Tom Thorne of the 29th Infantry Division faces the horrifying prospect of fighting his way ashore on Omaha Beach, a stretch of coast more heavily defended than the Allied commanders anticipate. From G.I. to general, The Steel Wave carries us through the war’s most crucial juncture, the invasion that altered the flow of the war and, ultimately, changed history.

Lee's Lieutenants: A Study In Command - Volume Two - Cedar Mountain to Chancellorsville by Douglas Southall Freeman 1943 Hardcover

An unquestioned masterpiece of the historian's art, and a towering landmark in the literature of the American Civil War. Volume one of this magnificent three-volume narrative closed with the Confederate reorganization that followed the Seven Days' battles. In volume two, "Cedar Mountain to Chancellorsville," Douglas Southall Freeman recounts the succession of battles that are among the most celebrated in the history of American warfare.
..it is Jackson who is the central figure in this volume. The history of the Confederate Army from Cedar Mountain to Sharpsburg and back again to the Rappahannock is, in its finest lines, his military biography. By the spring of 1863, "Old Jack" personifies the mobility, the resolution, and the offensive daring of the Army, and his death is a defeat that cancels all the gains at Chancellorsville.

Campaigning with the Irish Brigade: Pvt John Ryan, 28th Massachusetts, edited by Sandy Barnard 2001 First Edition Hardcover with Dust Jacket NEW!

John Ryan, a 16-year-old laborer from West Newton, Mass., enlisted in the 28th Massachusetts on Jan. 1, 1862. From that date until 1876, except for several months, Ryan was an enlisted man in the United State Army. For 10 of those years, he served as a trooper in the 7th Cavalry, surviving the battle of Little Bighorn. He returned to West Newton upon his discharge, enjoying a good life until his death in 1926. As a member of the 28th Massachusetts, Ryan participated in many of the major campaigns and battles in the East. In November 1862, the regiment joined the renowned Irish Brigade, taking the place of the non-Irish 29th Massachusetts. From then until December 1864, upon his discharge, Ryan served with the brigade. He ended his Civil War service with a six-month tour of duty with the 61st Massachusetts. A number of published diaries, letters, and memoirs of members of the Irish Brigade have appeared over the years. Ryan’s memoir, evidently begun by 1887, joins that list. Ryan writes well and recounts in some detail the major actions of the regiment and of the brigade. His descriptions of camp life are particularly good, but there are lapses in his story.
