We had a slow start yesterday. The pump that came with the raft wasn’t working, so we had to scramble to find a replacement. Wind gusts in the afternoon reaching 30 mph also slowed us down. On top of that, the salmon fly take petered out.

But after spending a long time at some specific runs that contained rising fish, we found a fly pattern that worked exceptionally well: a size 12 Tan North Branch Caddis. Where we fish in the Appalachian region, this size would be too big. But in Idaho, where everything seems bigger, this was the perfect size to land multiple fish, including this Cutthroat. It probably also didn’t hurt that the fish here had most likely never seen this Michigan-based fly pattern.

It’s almost that time of the year. This weekend will mark the tenth annual fly fishing trip with two of my college buddies.

We take turns hosting this trip at our home waters, fishing various rivers and streams in Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee. This year we will head back to the GSMNP on the NC side.

Update on my shoulder and fly tying:

At this point, I have formally finished physical therapy for my rotator cuff that I had surgery on last October. I’m probably at about 80% mobility, and will never be back to 100%. However, I am now able to fly fish and, in fact, I booked a trip with my son Seth to Idaho for most of July. We hope to fish the Henry’s Fork most of the time, but would love to receive any advice on where to fish, from Island Park to Idaho Falls.

I am currently working on replenishing my depleted inventory of Pat’s Stoneflies. You can check out my website at Flydoctor.net for updates on supplies of specific patterns. I’ll just say that it has been particularly difficult to get a hold of certain materials because of the tariff situation worldwide. So be aware that this could be a difficult season to get your usual fly patterns from suppliers given these restrictions.
