My circuit: Mint Fest in North Judson, Woofstock in Valparaiso, and Blueberry Fest in Plymouth.

✨Hey festival friends,
I’m sad to announce that 🐾Woofstock will not be happening. The event has been cancelled indefinitely. That said, I’ll be looking for a different festival to participate in. This year I’ll only be going to 🍃Mint Fest and 🫐Blueberry Fest!

I hope to find something to add to my circuit next year! See you all at Mint and Blueb Fest! 💚💙

Amygdaloidal Basalt Showing Lake Superior Agate Nodules

1. The Matrix: Vesicular Basalt
The dark, holey rock holding everything together is basalt, a volcanic rock.

The Gas Bubbles: When this lava was flowing billions of years ago (about 1.1 billion years ago for the Lake Superior region), it was filled with dissolved gases. As the lava cooled and pressure dropped, those gases formed bubbles, much like carbonation in a soda.

Vesicles: In geology, those empty holes are called vesicles. If you find a rock that is just the dark host with empty holes, it is "vesicular basalt."

2. The Transformation: Amygdules
An amygdule (from the Greek word for "almond") is simply a vesicle that has been filled in with secondary minerals later in its life.

Mineral Seepage: Over millions of years, groundwater rich in dissolved silica (quartz) and iron seeped through the porous basalt.

Layering: As the silica precipitated out of the water, it lined the inside of the bubbles. If the process was steady and the mineral content shifted, it created the classic fortification banding seen in the tiny orange-and-white stone in the center of your photo.

3. Connection to Lake Superior Agates
While your photo shows the agates still "in situ" (trapped in the host rock), most LSAs we find on beaches or in gravel pits are "loose."

Weathering: Basalt is relatively soft and susceptible to chemical weathering. Over eons, the basalt breaks down into clay and soil, releasing the much harder quartz/agate nodules.

Glacial Action: In our region, glaciers acted like giant sandpaper, crushing the basalt and tumbling the agates, which is why we often find them with that characteristic "pitted" husk or "peeled" look.
