This popped up in my memories and made me laugh because it’s pretty much still my life.

As much as I would LOVE to say Shake Rattle & Sew is my full time job, you guys haven’t made me quite famous enough for that yet 😂😂 so when I’m not sewing blankets, doing shows, ordering fabric, packing orders and doing all the other crap that comes with owning a small business, I’m doing hair.

This October will be 16 YEARS of doing hair in a senior living community. Which is honestly crazy to even type.

And doing hair there has never really meant just doing hair.

Apparently on this particular day 3 years ago I noticed one of my residents had a hole in his pants, so during lunch I sat down at the sewing machine and fixed them. Because obviously 😂 And Becca caught me doing it.

But that’s kind of how it goes. You do their hair, you fix their pants, you listen to their stories, you know their families, you laugh with them, worry about them and somewhere along the way you just plain love them.

And I suppose when you really look at it, there’s not a huge difference between my two jobs.

I take care of people.

Sometimes with a haircut.

Sometimes with a sewing machine.

And sometimes by making a ridiculously soft blanket that feels like a hug when somebody needs one.

Maybe someday Shake Rattle & Sew will explode enough that I get to sew your blankets full time. Until then, I’ll keep bouncing between the salon chair and the sewing machine like I have for the last 16 years. ❤️

And yes… BUY MORE BLANKETS. I’m trying to retire over here. 😂😂😂

Hello thank you for checking us out! I thought I should reintroduce myself for anyone that doesn’t know me or my story!

Shake Rattle and Sew started back in 2007, when I began making baby blankets and lovies — hoping one day they’d be for children of my own. When that path looked different than I imagined, I started doing craft shows instead. My mom joined me, and it became our thing — our way of spending time together, even without grandchildren to bring her.

When Mom was diagnosed with cancer, those shows and all that sewing became something more. It brought her joy. It gave her a reason to keep fighting. She was so proud of what we’d built together.

When she passed, this business became my way of honoring her — and of doing for others what it once did for us: giving someone a hug, on their best days and their hardest ones.

Every blanket I make carries a little bit of that story. If you’ve been following along, I’d love for you to say hi in the comments 🤍

SIOUX FALLS… I have a little news. 🥹🤍

This fall is bringing me one of those I really wish I could clone myself weekends.

Two shows I absolutely LOVE landed on the same weekend, which means this year I’ll be missing the washpav Sidewalk Arts Festival so I can head to The Market at White Barns

And I’m not going to lie… I feel a little guilty about it. Sioux Falls has supported Shake Rattle & Sew for YEARS, and getting to see so many of you at that show has always been one of my favorite parts of fall.

But then I realized something…

Why should my locals get LESS when I can give you MORE?! 😏

So instead of one crazy show day, I’m going to be hosting some OPEN SHOPPING DAYS at our NEW LOCATION! 🎉

And trust me… in store is MORE. 😉

Apparently Gus has added overnight fire prevention to his Shake Rattle & Sew job description. 😳🐾

Gus normally doesn’t sleep with me because if he gets to, Sheeba thinks she should too… and I love that diva dearly, but she snores like a grown man after a 16 hour shift. 😂 So nobody gets to sleep with me.

Except last night Gus REFUSED to go downstairs.

At 2:45 AM he started licking my face and pawing at me. I thought he needed to potty, but he wouldn’t follow me. I went back to bed and he kept pawing at my pillow, jumped over me toward the nightstand and started barking and growling.

That’s when I smelled it.

My phone charger was MELTING AND SMOKING against my pillowcase while I was sleeping. 😳

I had ignored him, told him to go to sleep AND threatened to lock him downstairs 😂… but he would NOT give up until I figured it out.

So Gus is officially Employee of the Month, gets to sleep wherever he wants for the rest of his life, and has been told approximately 7,482 times today that he is the BEST BOY. ❤️

I’m thanking Gus and God because I’m very grateful I’ll never know how differently last night could have ended.

Now I need to know… has your pet ever warned you about something or done something that made you KNOW they knew before you did?! 👇🏻🐾

And maybe go check that phone charger next to your bed. 😳

Today we said “see you later” to our Grandpa Bumpy. ❤️

A husband of 70 years to our NaNa. A dad. A grandpa. And a quiet, steady part of the family behind Shake Rattle & Sew.

Funny enough, he may have been the ONLY person in this entire family who somehow escaped being put to work. 😂

He watched the rest of us pull pins, fold blankets, roll blankets, haul fabric, pack orders and do whatever needed to be done… but somehow, we never made Bumpy join the production line. He got a lifetime pass. ❤️

NaNa, on the other hand, has taught generations of us how to create with our hands. Sewing, crafting and making something beautiful out of seemingly ordinary pieces has always been part of our family.

And maybe that’s why Shake Rattle & Sew means so much more to us than simply making blankets.

Our hands make them, but our family is woven into them.

This little business has lived through some of our happiest days and carried us through some of our hardest. Through celebrations, babies, weddings, illnesses, losses and goodbyes, we still show up. We cut. We pin. We sew. We fold. We pack.

Because somewhere on the other side of that box is someone who needs a hug.

Today, our family needed a few extra hugs of our own.

Tomorrow, and in the days after, we’ll be back around those tables together doing what this family has always done… all hands on deck, making the softest hugs we possibly can for all of you.

First, we owe you all an apology for the delay!

Between being completely consumed with organizing Village Creek Days as a board member and then heading straight to cheer on my nephew at the State Baseball Tournament, life got a little crazier than we planned. ❤️⚾
