Finishing touches on a hat are balancing out this afternoon, ahead of a wicked cold wave. This is my first hat. It’s a personal project with special touches. Looking forward to wearing it. Both the base and the fur trim are vintage - in the range of 50 to 70 years of age and both had been very well maintained. I love combining vintage to create something new, either with a vintage feel or an all new vibe. Working on dressing the hem of an unusual coat. The lining is silk and stunning. The hem along the fur join and the inside flap hang seems to have taken on years of protecting the owner from wind, cold and maybe a snowy moment or three. Silk can breakdown a bit in patchy ways over time. Rather than replacing this amazing liner, my choice is to line it with velvet ribbon. It’s tedious work but I think it will be lovely and respectful of the whole vibe of this wild, and wonderful coat. More about the coat later. Today is about restoration and celebration of that caring restoration. This coat might get a name. Hmmm….

It’s been a minute since there has been time to work with fur and it felt good last night and early this morning to join two vintage items together to create a modern take on a beret. The age of the fur (adapted color) is approximately 60 to 70 years old and in excellent condition. The tasteful tan hat could be about the same age. I’ve added my label over the original felt hat label. If you are curious about the origin of the hat, here’s what’s on Wikipedia about Best & Co - Fifth Ave. - New York: a department store founded in 1879 by Albert Best in New York City (note: other source indicates that it began in Greenwich, Connecticut and move headquarters to NY). The company initially sold clothing for infants and children, but later expanded to women's clothing and accessories. It was known for its tastefully styled and proper women's clothes and its sturdy children's wear. Philip Le Boutillier served as president during the late 1930s. The store had expanded to 20 branches by 1966, when the company was acquired by McCrory's, who also operated Lerner Shops and S. Klein. In late-1970, McCrory's liquidated the company. At the time of its closing, the store had 1,200 employees. In other research, I’ve learned that it got started in Connecticut.

Working on a coyote vest from a substantial jacket, here. The collar of this garment is gorgeous! Keeping the pelt flow by rounding in the arm holes rather than a straight trim is a new approach. It is sure to be not only warm but fun to wear! If you have a coat that feels too full for modern wear, especially in the southern states, or the sleeves are too tight, let’s chat about creating a vest for you and preserving the joy of and extending the wearable years of your garment. …work in progress with pins in place means exciting times around the corner for a new owner of this treasure! Just completed a vest conversion of a gorgeous mink jacket for Furs by Farrow and a commissioned alteration of a Fox jacket for a client, too. The mink hosts a label from Beverly Hills and it’s a very well constructed garment in fabulous condition with no monogram and a pristine liner. Stay tuned for conversions coming up of coyote, raccoon, beaver and more mink. Fall will arrive before you know it!

It’s July, but fur projects are happening now. On deck now is a silky, long mink vest restyled from a vintage coat constructed with Meisel-Peskin pelts. Meuse-Peskin of Brooklyn, NY was founded in 1934. The sleeves were full skins but the body of the coat is constructed with fully let out pelts. The lining is nice and shapely. Earlier today, added a Fox collar to a fabulous curly lamb jacket and altered sleeve length for a client. September will be here before we know it’ss
