Meet the ‘Joey’ Avocado! 🌿 This cold-hardy avocado variety is a fun choice for gardeners who want to try their hand at growing something a little more tropical. And yes — the goal is homegrown avocados! 🥑

Thinking about planting one this fall? Location, drainage, and winter protection are especially important for getting a young Joey off to a good start.

🍂 Joey Avocado Fall Planting Checklist:

☀️ Soak up the sun: Choose a spot with at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.

💨 Give it some shelter: A south or southeast-facing location near a house, fence, or windbreak can help protect it from cold winter winds.

💧 Drainage, drainage, drainage! Avocado roots do NOT like sitting in water. If you’re working with heavy Georgia clay or poor drainage, consider a raised mound or large container.

🪴 Dig wide, not deep: Make your hole about twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper. Keep the top of the root ball about 1–2 inches above the surrounding soil.

🍂 Tuck those roots in: Add 3–4 inches of mulch for insulation and moisture retention, but leave a few inches of breathing room around the trunk.

❄️ Baby it through winter: Young avocado trees are much more sensitive to cold than established trees. Keep frost cloth ready for those freezing Georgia nights!
