Most quilters I know do not struggle with technique. They struggle with fabric.

Not finding it — finding it is the fun part. The hard part is standing at a cutting table with a pile of things you love and not being sure which combination is the right one.

Fabric selection is a skill. It can be taught. And once you have the framework, those decisions get faster, easier, and a lot more satisfying.

That is what Permission to Play is built around. I have been developing this as a structured series on Patreon — monthly block studies that use a single block to work through color, value, and contrast concepts, so you build a real framework instead of just hoping the next fabric pull goes better.

The first study — built around the Churn Dash block — is available on YouTube now, free, so you can see exactly how it works before you decide if Permission to Play is for you.

Link below. If it resonates, more block studies are waiting for you on Patreon.

Here's a peek behind the curtain: this is Lesson 1 of a five-part Churn Dash study I created for my Patreon series, Permission to Play. Instead of just teaching you how to piece the block (which is Lesson 3), this lesson is about learning to read it — understanding which fabrics are doing the work, and why the same block can look completely different depending on where you place your values. If you've ever felt unsure about fabric choices for a block, this one's for you. Full video is up now, and Day 2 drops tomorrow.

Come join me in Pennsylvania for my Permission to Play class!

We're excited to kick off our first class!

Most quilters do not struggle with technique. They struggle with fabric. Not finding it — finding fabric is the fun part. The hard part is standing at the cutting table with a pile of things you love and not knowing which combination is the right one.

Fabric selection is a skill. It can be taught. And once you have the framework, those decisions become faster, easier, and a lot more satisfying.

Permission to Play is a full-day workshop(10AM - 4PM with a break for lunch) at Vintage Pink and Green in Weissport, Pennsylvania. Join us on July 27, 2026 as Stacy of Stacy Creates Stuff guides you through multiple practice blocks designed to build confidence in fabric selection and value placement.

Block 1 of the Haven Quilt-Along is the Dutchman’s Puzzle—the center block of the quilt and the only one you’ll make just once.

It’s built entirely from flying geese, with a small twist that creates a pinwheel at the center. If you’ve already made flying geese, you’re ready for this block.

Haven is a 12-week quilt-along created as a place of calm, comfort, and creative refuge. The name reflects the heart of the project: a reminder that quilting can be a source of solace and peace in our busy lives. Each week, a video lesson walks you through the construction of a block or border unit, beginning with an introduction in week one.
