Let’s talk about mum “redos” for a minute. 🤍
I’ve had a few mums brought to me this season that were originally made somewhere else, asking if I could “fix” or redo them.
And I want to explain why sometimes that redo may cost just as much as purchasing a brand-new mum from me.
When I say “fix,” I don’t necessarily mean the mum was made wrong. It simply wasn’t made by me—and therefore, it doesn’t look like my work.
I am incredibly particular about the details of my mums. I spend a ridiculous amount of time layering, placing, trimming, finishing and making sure that even the mechanics are hidden in a way that looks pretty and intentional. I want the front, the sides and all those little places you think nobody will notice to look finished.
So when I’m handed someone else’s finished mum and asked to make it look like one of mine, I usually can’t just add a bow here or a ribbon there.
I have to take things apart.
Rework sections.
Cover exposed mechanics.
Replace or add materials.
Re-layer and rebuild pieces.
And sometimes I spend more time trying to rework an existing mum than I would have spent building one from scratch.
You’re not simply paying for the supplies I add—you’re paying for the hours, detail and craftsmanship it takes to turn something I didn’t create into something I’m comfortable putting my name on.
So please don’t be surprised if I look at a redo and tell you, “At this point, it may cost about the same for me to make you a new one.”
I promise I’m not trying to charge you twice for a mum you already bought. I just know the standard I want leaving my shop with Among the Thorns attached to it. 🤍
Because if it leaves my hands, I want it to look like it came from my hands. 🌵
