I get asked this often. Thumping works, will bring the fish to you if in an area where fish are. You have to make the right presentation.
History of fish thumping
Fish thumping is an old fishing technique based on the idea that low-frequency vibrations and repeated impacts travel through the water and can attract or stimulate fish, particularly species such as striped bass, catfish, and other predatory fish.
* Traditional origins: Fishermen have used banging, tapping, splashing, and other noises around boats and fishing structures for generations. Much of the early practice was informal and passed down among fishermen rather than documented scientifically.
* Catfish fishing: Similar techniques became particularly associated with noodling and other catfish traditions, where disturbing the water or creating vibrations could cause fish to investigate or move.
* Striped bass: In the southeastern U.S., anglers eventually began experimenting with thumping on aluminum boats and other surfaces to create underwater vibration. The technique became especially associated with reservoir striped-bass fishing.
* Modern thumper boxes: The concept evolved into mechanical fish-attractor/thumper boxes, which produce repeated underwater pulses or impacts. These are now used by some guides and anglers to try to bring fish toward a boat or fishing location.
* Why it might work: Fish have highly developed sensory systems for detecting water movement. Their lateral line detects pressure changes and vibrations, while their inner ear helps detect sound. A thumper essentially creates a series of pressure/vibration signals that fish can detect at considerable distances.
There is an important distinction between “fish thumping” as an old fishing practice and the modern commercial thumper box. The latter is a more recent engineered version of the same basic idea.
