Vermicomposting Workshop!

🌱 GARDENERS: That cloud of potting-mix dust isn't harmless just because it's natural.

Potting mix and compost can contain naturally occurring microorganisms, including Legionella longbeachae and Nocardia.

When dry materials create airborne dust, we can potentially breathe those particles into our lungs.

At Lumbri Worms & Garden, LLC, we're all about living soil—but living soil deserves respect.

🪱 Lightly moisten dusty materials
😷 Wear respiratory protection for dusty work
🧤 Wear gloves
⬇️ Pour close to the ground
🧼 Wash your hands afterward
💨 Work with good ventilation

Don't fear the biology. Learn how to work with it safely.

🍄 + 🪱 = SOIL-BUILDING POWER 🌱

Your soil is talking.

At Lumbri Worms & Garden, we're listening—and putting biology to work.
Growing mushrooms is only part of what we do.

After our gourmet mushrooms finish growing, we're left with spent mushroom substrate (SMS)—organic material that has already been worked on by fungi.

Instead of automatically treating that material as waste, suitable SMS can become another resource in our soil-building cycle.

Then come the worms. 🪱
Through vermicomposting, composting worms help process suitable organic materials into worm castings/vermicompost that can be returned to the garden as a soil amendment.

So our system starts looking like this:

🌱 Healthier Soil-Building Practices
That's what sustainability looks like to us.

We're combining mushroom cultivation + vermiculture + gardening instead of treating them as three separate operations.

The goal isn't just bigger plants.

Build the soil. Feed the biology. Reuse organic resources. Let nature do some of the heavy lifting.

Healthy Soil. Healthy Life. 🌱

🌱 YOUR SOIL IS TALKING — ARE YOU LISTENING? 🪱

Your garden soil gives you clues about what’s happening beneath the surface—often before your plants start showing signs of trouble.

Take a closer look at these 8 soil signals:

🌱 Dark, rich soil — Often indicates good organic matter and biological activity.

🤍 Pale or gray soil — May signal low organic matter, poor drainage, or compaction.

🧡 Red or orange soil — Often caused by iron oxides. Test your pH before adding lime or other amendments.

🪱 Earthworms present — A great sign that conditions may be supporting an active soil ecosystem.

💧 Water pooling — Could point to compaction, heavy clay, grading, or drainage problems.

🤎 Sticky clay texture — Clay can hold nutrients and water but may need better structure and organic matter.

👃🏿 Earthy smell — That familiar “good soil” aroma can be associated with active soil microorganisms.

🌿 What grows wild — Weeds and volunteer plants can provide clues about moisture, fertility, and soil conditions—but they aren't a substitute for testing.

🪱 Where Do Worms Fit In?
At Lumbri Worms & Garden, LLC, we believe healthy gardening starts with building the soil.

Vermicomposting turns suitable organic materials into nutrient-rich worm castings (vermicompost) that can help support soil structure, organic matter, moisture management, and a thriving soil ecosystem.

Remember: observe first, test when necessary, and amend with purpose.
Your soil isn't just dirt.

It's a living ecosystem. 🌎🪱🌱

Cleaned, Sanitized & Restocked — The Next Mushroom Grow Begins! 🍄🌱

The cleaning is done, and now comes one of my favorite parts — stocking the fruiting tent for the next grow!

After thoroughly cleaning our mushroom fruiting tent with a 5% bleach-water solution and allowing everything to dry, we're bringing the mushroom blocks back in and getting the environment dialed in.

A clean fruiting space helps reduce contamination and gives every new crop a fresh start.

Next comes humidity, fresh-air exchange, patience…and mushrooms!

🍄Clean space. Fresh start. Healthy harvests.

Clean Tent. Healthy Mushrooms. Better Harvests. 🍄🌱

Keeping our mushroom fruiting tent clean is a big part of producing healthy, high-quality mushrooms at Lumbri Worms & Garden, LLC.

Between grows, we thoroughly clean and sanitize the fruiting environment using a 5% bleach-water solution. Regular cleaning helps reduce mold, bacteria, spores, and other contaminants while keeping our shelves, equipment, and growing space ready for the next crop.

Mushroom growing isn't just about what you see at harvest—there's plenty of work happening behind the scenes. Cleanliness, consistency, and attention to detail matter from start to finish.

Clean environment. Stronger grows. Better harvests. 🍄💚
