The Donnas - Gold Medal - Gold Vinyl - LP

Famously formed in 8th grade for a school talent show, The Donnas began as a self-styled co-ed answer to The Ramones, playing gleefully unapologetic, pop-punk paeans to adolescent alienation and hedonism from a decidedly female perspective.



But by the time of 2004's Gold Medal, their sixth album and second for the major label Atlantic, the group has clearly—dare we say it?—matured. With the notable exception of the single (and career highlight) "Fall Behind Me," Gold Medal marks a move away from The Donnas' harder/faster ethos towards a more polished (acoustic guitars…whaaat?) pop sound veering towards '70s psychedelia under the helm of Avril Lavigne producer Butch Walker. And you can tell it from the album's graphics, which flash vintage, Peter Max-esque squiggles on the front cover and feature a faux black light poster inside (which Real Gone Music have reproduced for this reissue along with the original printed inner sleeve).



The result was an album that lead vocalist Brett Anderson a.k.a. Donna A. deems her favorite, and one that stands as probably the most underrated album in the band's fabulous catalog.

The Donnas – Spend The Night - Hot Pink Vinyl - LP

Having lovingly reissued the first four albums by our all-time favorite all-female punk band, we now turn our attention to The Donnas' major label debut for the Atlantic label, where they went after recording a quartet of classics for Lookout! 2002's Spend the Night was by far the band's most popular album, hitting 62 on the Billboard charts, but it wasn't just the major label distribution mojo that upped the sales. This record doesn't have a dud on it, and boasts such Donnas devastators as "Who Invited You," "Take It Off," "You Wanna Get Me High," and "Pass It Around." Indeed, with one killer hook after another, the big mystery about this record is, why didn't it make them superstars? Our reissue also includes "Big Rig," which was on the original LP release but got left off the CD, and the insert featuring lyrics and a Freddy Krueger guest appearance. Hot pink vinyl!

Sunny Day Real Estate - The Rising Tide - 2XLP

The Rising Tide is the fourth and final studio album by American rock band Sunny Day Real Estate. Following the release of Live, the group left independent label Sub Pop for major label Time Bomb Recordings, and changed from a quartet to a trio. The band spent a month working on material through jamming, eventually resulting in around 30 songs. They began recording at Dreamland Recording Studios in West Hurley, New York with producer Lou Giordano at the end of 1999. The Rising Tide is an alternative rock album, with elements of progressive rock and symphonic rock; the lyrics include references to rain, angels and the ocean. Individual tracks drew comparison to Rush, Yes and Doves, while frontman Jeremy Enigk's vocals were compared to Yes frontman Jon Anderson and U2 frontman Bono.

"One" was released to alternative radio in May 2000, with The Rising Tide following on June 20. It reached number 97 on the Billboard 200, and went on to sell over 67,000 copies in the US by June 2001. It received a generally positive reaction from music critics, some of whom praised Giordano's production and change in Enigk's vocal style. It was promoted with listening parties and in-store appearances, prior to a six-week North American tour. The group went on another US stint towards the end of the year, and had planned to visit Europe in early 2001, however, the trek was cancelled. The group eventually broke up in June citing management issues, advertising and Time Bomb's distribution deal, although they had reunited for two times in 2009 and 2022.

Even more than its 1990 predecessor, this 1992 double album (which clocks in at nearly an hour) found Iron Maiden recapturing the grandeur and driving power of their early classics. Pixies - Surfer Rosa - LP 23.98

The Pixies' finest album is also one of the finest rock albums ever recorded. Challenging, but catchy; baffling, but fulfilling; It is an uncompromisingly raw, driving masterpiece of dissonant but tuneful pop, like nothing you've heard before. Recorded by legend Steve Albini (Big Black, Breeders, PJ Harvey, Nirvana) in the spring of 1988, Surfer Rosa is still fresh over a decade later.

The thudding drum intro of "Bone Machine" gives way to the stunning chorus of "Break My Body," which keeps up the bone theme along with "Broken Face." The best song of the album is "Gigantic" written by both Kim Deal and Black Francis and sung by Kim. Opening with a simple bass line, with lyrics about two lovers, it is an unbelievably catchy song. This song should have been a huge, huge hit; that it wasn't is an indictment of the music industry of 1988.

Side two of the record opens with acoustic guitar on "Where Is My Mind?" Black Francis' quirky lyrics are at the forefront. "With your feet on the air and your head on the ground. Where is my mind?" The next track, "Cactus" tells the tale of a prisoner writing to his wife, "I miss your soup/And I miss your bread/And a letter in your writin' doesn't mean your not dead. Bloody your hands on a cactus tree/Wipe it on your dress and send it to me." "Tony's Theme" is about "a superhero named Tony." Francis' penchant for writing in Spanish appears on the next two tracks, "Oh My Golly!" and "Vamos," a different version of a Come On Pilgrim track. The US version of Surfer Rosa ends with "Brick Is Red," a song which ends the album, leaving you begging for more. At 33 minutes, Surfer Rosa needs no filler, and there is none. Great song follows great song, making this album the Pixies' greatest and most influential.
