Just an FYI…

PROTECTING SOMERNITES CRUISE

Somernites Cruise is one of Somerset's most iconic traditions. Monthly from April through October, thousands of people come together in the Car Cruise Capital of Kentucky to enjoy classic cars, support local businesses, and spend time with family and friends. The Somerset Police Department is committed to helping preserve that tradition.

Since cruise festivities began this year, however, officers have documented a substantial increase in dangerous and disruptive behavior occurring along the U.S. 27 cruise route following the downtown car show. Compared to the same months last year (April and May), reports involving reckless driving, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, fighting, excessive noise, private property damage, and DUI-related offenses have doubled, and in some categories, tripled.

These are not harmless activities. Reckless driving, burnouts, street racing, alcohol-related offenses, and other unlawful behavior create serious safety risks for spectators, participants, business owners, residents, and visitors. They also threaten the future of an event that has become a source of pride for our community.

As a result, the Somerset Police Department is increasing enforcement efforts during cruise weekends. You will see more officers in the area, more traffic enforcement, and a stronger law enforcement presence overall. This is not an effort to stop Somernites Cruise. It is an effort to protect it.

The overwhelming majority of attendees enjoy the event responsibly. Our focus is not on those individuals. Our focus is on the actions that put others at risk and create an environment that discourages families, tourists, and local residents from participating.

The Somerset Police Department has been in communication with Somernites Cruise organizers, who share our commitment to maintaining a safe, family-friendly atmosphere. Together, we want to ensure that Somernites Cruise remains an event that residents and visitors can enjoy for generations to come.

"We don’t want people to see the increased police activity and think we're trying to ruin the cruise," Chief Josh Wesley said. "We're trying to preserve it. We want families to feel comfortable bringing their children, classic car owners to feel comfortable bringing their vehicles, and visitors to feel comfortable spending time in our community. The behavior we're addressing today is not the cruise Somerset has known and loved for decades, and we have a responsibility to protect the people who come here to enjoy it."

As we prepare for another Somernites Cruise weekend, we want to emphasize that lawless behavior will not be tolerated. Those who choose to engage in these activities should expect enforcement action.

We appreciate the support of the many participants, spectators, businesses, and community members who continue to make Somernites Cruise a success.
