Hi Everyone! Fall is right around the corner and it is time for our Fall Quarterly Meeting. Please join us on Sunday September 27th at Lilly Library in Florence, MA from 1-3 pm.
Our topic this fall is Local Cultural Council grants, which are a project of the Mass Cultural Council. Are you an artist or craftsperson here in Massachusetts? Have you been envisioning a creative project that could benefit and engage your local community? Have you been wondering whether there are funding opportunities at the local level to help you make your vision a reality? Then come and find out about the Mass Cultural Council's Local Cultural Council (LCC) grants!
Please join us to hear from two local artists who have received Local Cultural Council grants in recent years to support their fiber and textile related projects.
Andrea Caluori received an LCC grant from the Ashfield Cultural Council to interview Ashfield residents about the significance of cloth as a memory-keeper. She documented these stories in her zine The Memory of Fabric: A Collection of Stories about Textile and Remembering. Andrea writes, “[…] clothing has the capability to act as an archivist—to preserve memory through the tangibility of a person’s lived experience imprinted into the fabric’s very fibers. I believe this extends to all textile and fiber artworks that weave together the fabric’s functionality with the wearer or maker’s narrative.” Andrea also currently serves on the Ashfield Cultural Council, and can tell us more about how the grant process works. Holly Field received an LCC grant from the Belchertown Cultural Council for her project The Fabric of a Revolution: Recreating a 13 Star American Flag.” This project grew out of Holly's desire to celebrate the 250th anniversary of American independence. It served as a way for her to reflect on our country's history, and shift the narrative from talk of battles and generals to the everyday people involved with textile production in a time before industrialization. She recreated a 13-star American flag based on a surviving example from the time of the American Revolution. Recreation of her flag started with the raw materials of flax and sheep's wool which were spun into threads, woven into fabric, dyed with historically accurate dyes, and then cut and hand sewn.
