The goal is not to overdo it. I got a good color match for the front, quick coat of French polish, and we’re about done here.
The finicky might notice that I had the choice to line up the join with the center seam of the back or the point of the heel.
I chose the back. The neck is not on center. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Is your job stressful or tedious, Cat?
Well, I’d have to say there are long stretches of routine punctuated by jobs that are like an ongoing highwire act, and this would be the latter.

The painting on the back must remain as undamaged as it is (which means a little damaged, but nothing I did!), and the binding channel had to be chiseled out by hand due to the discrepancies of the squareness of the back and sides, and so also as to avoid the painting. (These days, we have routers for this. In general, that is.)

Taping the binding must not touch the painting.

Then it all gets leveled disturbing the original finish as minimally as possible, with binding grain that doesn’t like the scraper and bites, chatters, and grabs like a rabid Pomeranian.

It’s about as fun as it sounds, but it certainly captures one’s attention.

And of course, the funny thing is that he came in for another problem altogether and never noticed the bridge getting ready to leave the building.
