Big Mama Thornton was the first voice behind “Hound Dog.”

In 1952, Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton recorded the original version years before it became a rock-and-roll hit. The song was written specifically for her style, her attitude, and her blues delivery. Her recording climbed the R&B charts and established the sound that later versions would follow.

Thornton wasn’t just a singer. She was a drummer, harmonica player, and commanding live performer who helped shape the bridge between blues and early rock music. Artists admired her raw, unapologetic stage presence and the emotional force in her voice.

Four years later, Elvis Presley recorded his version and it went global, but the foundation of the song remained rooted in Thornton’s performance.

Rarely highlighted is that Thornton also recorded the original version of “Ball and Chain,” later made famous by Janis Joplin, further cementing her influence on rock history.

Big Mama Thornton’s voice helped build the sound of modern popular music. Her story is a reminder that many of the most influential voices in American music started in the blues — long before the spotlight followed.
