Saturday we celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the Starfish Books book club that meets each month at Barn and Beach! It’s been a wonderful year of new friendships, good books, and meaningful conversations. Looking forward to what the next 12 months bring!

Here’s a glimpse of the creations local crafters worked on during last Sunday’s Audio and Arts gathering at Barn & Beach Designs! We listened to The Santa Suit novel as we crafted.

For this week’s I’m reading from Old Crimes, the recent short story collection by NC’s pride and joy, Jill McCorkle. Jill was born and raised in Lumberton,NC - the same town where I was born and where I attended high school. Jill is a treasure. The stories she tells are so familiar to me; I know these voices.

I thought it would be fun to do a post where I read from a book I’m currently enjoying. Maybe I’ll do this every Tuesday? I absolutely loved this new novel by Charlotte McConaghy - it’s literary, suspenseful, mysterious, and the descriptions of the sea and coastline put you right in it, smelling the salt air and hearing the cries of birds.

Saturday was Independent Bookstore Day! Starfish Books celebrated by talking about Daniel Mason’s North Woods with the Barn & Beach Designs Book Club and enjoying beautiful and tasty starfish cookies made by the very talented Tami Frink ( on Instagram)! Next year I’ll take photos at the actual event!

Just finished God of the Woods for my April book club with my girlfriends. We had a great conversation reflecting on all the characters - there’s a lot of them! My favorite was Judy. Barbara was a cool teenager, but dressing like a punk rocker in 1975? In 1975 I was wearing bell bottoms and peasant tops and listening to the Doobie Brothers, Wings, and Linda Ronstadt. 😂
