Photos from the last few weeks. I may be a nursery owner, but I was an avid gardener before that. I love to visit gardens and nurseries. Gardeners are a band of brothers and sisters. These photos are for those brothers and sisters.

Gunter’s Gardens is planning on being open 9:00-3:00 today. Looking out my bedroom window this morning I saw all of our dogwoods were still standing (normally the first plants to get blown over), sooooo, we haven’t experienced severe winds or any flooding at all. Cross your fingers that we slowly get 3 inches of rain and no wind. It has been so dry! We need it!

Gunter’s Gardens has loaded up with huge 8” Mums, mostly cracking open, for $11.99. Beautiful trays of pansies and violas are still just $24.99. We have/continue to load up with plants for people to put in their fall containers. As always, we have healthy plants for your landscape (trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers) and a wide selection. Groundcovers, edging plants, Japanese Maples, so much inventory! This is what 26 years-in-business looks like.

Gunter’s Gardens is located off Reidville Road in Spartanburg, SC. Our address is 315 Caldwell Circle, and our phone number is 864-909-5643.

We are convenient to both I-26 and I-85. Our customers regularly come from Gaffney, Greenville, Greer, Union, Tryon, Landrum, Columbus, Forest City/Rutherfordton, and often from much further. They come for quality plants, advice, and prices.

The first of the Mums are coming Thursday, Sept 17. Ours are usually huge. As I write this I see a humming bird going from flower to flower (on the lantana mostly). It’s still hot, but next week is supposed to be cooler, so we’ll get pansies, snapdragons, cabbages and kale next week.

As always, we have one of the widest selections of trees and shrubs available in this area. This time of year almost all of the plants are way bigger than what you can buy in the spring. We have huge azaleas, evergreen conifers, fruit trees and shade trees, lantana, Dogwoods, and many varieties of shrubs…including Encore Azalleas, Roses, Tea Olives (including orange flowered), Loropetalum, Confederate Jasmine (vine), Camellias, and so many more.

We are looking for someone with a background in landscaping to work at the nursery. Part time or full time. Planting into pots, trimming, pruning, weeding, helping customers, loading cars and unloading trucks of all sizes. More! It’s a great place to learn about plants, growing, gardening, and working with gardeners. We will keep you working year-round, even through the slow times. If you know of someone who might fit this description, please let them know.

Gunters Gardens will be open a half-day (9AM-1PM) on Labor Day. Breeze through our photos. If you were to drive into our parking lot today, you would instantly see a riot of color: roses, butterfly bushes, Abelias, Lantana, Loropetalum with their burgundy leaves, Hydrangeas still hanging on to their flowers. Weather will be cooling soon. Fall planting season has already started for many.

Our regular hours are Monday-Saturday 9-5.

Cooler weather will be here soon. We have loads of trees and shrubs, ground covers and vines. Come take a stroll through the flowers. It’s inspiring!

Just in…Redbuds (including Flamethrower), 4 varieties of Ginko, Teddy Bear Magnolia, Grancy Graybeard, Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry. Thanks to my friend Joy, who tracked down the landscaper for Blowing Rock to get the name of the PG Hydrangeas that look so fabulous in their downtown. We’ll be getting that variety tomorrow (I hope). We have a very nice selection of 7g pots of multiple varieties of screening plants. Need an impenetrable hedge with thorns you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy? Come see me. We’re not far off Reidville Road.

We still have a nice selection of plants to plug into your pots or flower beds. Lantana attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. I have a lot, especially Dallas Red and Miss Huff.

Crape Myrtle Trees are starting to bloom in the nursery. You can plant them anythime as long as you keep them watered.

I’m seeing a lot of photos of dead plants, practically all dead from not watering or overwatering. When in doubt stick your finger in the ground. Having trouble with grass in your beds? I have a chemical that kills ONLY grass…it won’t hurt flowers, shrubs, or trees.

It’s hot. Water water water! I want to see photos of healthy thriving plants that you got at Gunter’s Nursery & Green Center.

We have a nice selection of flowering annual and perennial plants to plug in to replace ones that have died. We have a great selection of trees and shrubs, including Crapemyrtles and PG Hydrangeas (blooming now). I have an interesting order of trees coming this week: Teddy Bear Magnolias in 7g and 15g (my favorite small Southern magnolia and one of the smallest), 50 Redbud trees in 7g and 15g, and several varieties of Ginko. We’re loaded with shrubs in all varieties, shapes, and sizes. As always, you’ll get great advice from our talented staff. As always, we’ll have fair and reasonable prices.

Gunter’s Gardens is in Spartanburg SC at 287 Caldwell Circle. 864-595-6900, open 9-5 every day but Sunday.

I’m focusing this post on hot weather plants for sun. My favorite annuals are Scaevola, Lantana, Portulaca, and Euphorbia.

I visited some of our competitors this week. Our quality and size of plants are often better. Our inventory selection is also better than most. Our sales people will help by answering questions and showing you what your options are. When you get to the cash register, we are better there too. All of these reasons, and more, are why people are coming from Easley, Union, Chester, Jonesville, Gaffney, Blacksburg, Tryon, Saluda, Hendersonville, Flat Rock, even Black Mountain. If you have not been, you should come.
