Hey there! Here’s a friendly reminder to make sure you have your Gold and Fish Pamphlet (either virtual or hard copy) this summer. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife requires you to have one while panning or prospecting. Check out this article for rules and tips on gold prospecting!

Dreaming of striking gold in Washington? You just might, but there are some rules!

From the swirling of gravel to that tiny flash of gold in your pan, Washington’s rivers are full of possibility. But before you grab your gear, there’s one thing you must have: the state’s “Gold and Fish” pamphlet. It’s not just a guide - it’s your actual permit, rulebook, and your key to keeping rivers healthy for salmon and steelhead.

You can’t just dig anywhere. Timing matters, gear is limited, and some rivers are totally off limits. If your plan isn’t covered in the pamphlet, you’ll need special approval.

Where to try your luck:
-Columbia River gravel bars and side channels
-Tributaries throughout the state with placer gold history (look at the geology around where you want to pan)
-Public access points with gravel beds
-Mountain streams in “gold country” (more gold, stricter rules)

Prospect like a pro:
-Carry the pamphlet (seriously, it’s required)
-Stick to small-scale gear like pans and mini sluices
-Avoid fish nests (redds) and visible spawning areas
-Fill in holes and leave the river better than you found it
-Pack out everything

Pro tip: Just because a spot was good once doesn’t mean it’s legal now, so make sure to always double check current rules before heading out.

Gold might be rare… but a good day on the river? That’s guaranteed.

Did you know that pearls, one of June's birthstones, are created by mollusks like oysters as a defense against irritants? When sand gets trapped, the mollusk produces nacre, or mother-of-pearl, to encase it. This nacre, composed of calcium carbonate and conchiolin, forms layers that give pearls their distinct shine. Pearls can be white, pink, black, or even blue, depending on their host's shell color. But here's the catch: they’re super rare! If you opened 10,000 wild oysters, you might find just one dazzling pearl hiding inside! How's that for a treasure hunt?

Enjoying rocks is a quiet joy with surprising depth. Here’s why letting stones steal a little of your attention can be wonderfully good for you 💎🌍
✨️ They slow time.
Holding a rock that took millennia to become itself gently rearranges your sense of urgency. Suddenly, rushing feels optional.
✨️ They ground the mind.
Texture, weight, temperature. Rocks pull awareness into the present moment, like meditation without the cushion.
