Before SPF. Before we knew better, and before we cared.
Remember the scent?
Something like clove and patchouli. Maybe sandalwood too? Whatever it was, it meant summer had finally started. To squeeze the bright orange gelée out of the tube and have it melt into your skin with the promise of a killer golden bronze tan by the end of the day was exciting, and infinitely satisfying. I remember my friends and I basking in the sun, cans of Tab by our side, and only leaving our beach towels to flirt with the lifeguards or take a swim😎
The ritual of experiencing Bain de Soleil was transcending. This was the tube that lived in every beach bag from the mid 70's until whenever someone finally told us about SPF.
Photographer Deana Clement found one of these tubes, perfectly worn, completely iconic, and in an homage to her late dad, she photographed it. It's now a fine art print to remind us of people we loved at their most relaxed and golden, and of ourselves at a time when life felt really sweet and simple.
We've had so many great conversations in the shop about this photograph! Tag someone who you think might remember👙Canvas zip bags available too🌞
