November lawn care looks a little different in Southeast Texas!
While other parts of the country are preparing for snow and freezing temperatures, Houston gardeners might still be mowing in 80° weather. Our subtropical climate means lawn care doesn’t follow the same rules everywhere!
As we head into November, here are a few things to keep in mind for your lawn:
🍃 Manage those leaves: Mulch light layers with your mower, but clear heavy accumulations that can smother your grass.
🌿 Mow as needed: If your grass is still growing, keep mowing at the appropriate height for your grass type.
🧪 Think before you fertilize: November is generally too late for routine nitrogen fertilization of warm-season lawns like St. Augustine. When in doubt, check your soil and local recommendations.
💧 Adjust your watering: Cooler temperatures and fall rainfall can mean less frequent irrigation. Check soil moisture before turning on the sprinklers.
🔎 Watch for lawn problems: Brown patches aren’t always a sign that your lawn needs more water or fertilizer. Look for signs of disease before treating the issue.
Remember, Houston’s weather can change quickly, so keep an eye on the forecast and be ready for an occasional cold snap!
