The Bus Stop 217 is the new downtown bar at the corner of 5th and Monroe, where the street flooded last week due to the water main break. As Downtown Springfield, Inc. has said, “At times like this, we rally together.”

8/28 6:45 a.m.-The break is approximately 12feet long, and the main is located deep underground. We are working to secure a larger excavator from a contractor to assist with the repair.

The crews that worked overnight have been sent home and are being relieved by a new group that arrived at 6:00 a.m.

At this time, we still do not have an estimated completion time. Based on what we’re seeing, it appears we will need to replace approximately 20 feet of 24-inch pipe.

The City is sending building and electrical inspectors to area businesses to assist with assessment for safety and restoration efforts, as power remains off to 51 in the area. Customers impacted by the power outage include those on the south side of Monroe Street to the north side of Capitol Avenue and along 3rd, 4th, and 5th Streets on the same block.

We’ll continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

As of 10:20 p.m., Monroe Street is closed between 4th and 5th Streets due to a 24-inch water main break that has caused significant damage to the roadway.

City crews will remain on site throughout the night, working to access the water main, assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary repairs. Monroe Street will remain closed between 4th and 5th Streets until further notice.

Due to fire safety concerns, buildings and businesses on the south side of Monroe Street between 4th and 5th Streets are currently without power.

If you need to access a building or business in this area, you will need to do so on foot. Please check directly with the business or building to confirm whether it is open before arriving.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area and use an alternate route. Additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

I can see Daisy Jane’s first location, next to Galina’s Pizza. Apparently there was quite a large break in the water main late this afternoon. It looks like they’ve got their work cut out for them. Look for more street closures tomorrow. Maybe some power outages, too, I’ve heard. This is certainly not what downtown needs now.😢
