2026 Oregon Wilderness Bull was a special one.

Even before I got my first bow when I first decided I wanted to take on bow hunting this was the first place I had heard stories about. It’s vast unforgiving landscape with endless ridges and deep canyons drew me in. The challenge of hunting the Caps seemed like someplace where men go to test themselves, some spartan s**t.

Fast forward a couple years and decided it was time to hunt in what would now be my new home state “backyard.” It was everything I thought it would be and more. This bull came out of what I would consider a hole. Over five miles in just to the top of this drainage and over 1,000 feet down in the bottom. The pack out was the definition of type 2 fun; steep, deep, over blowdowns, in the wind and rain but it only made everything that much sweeter in the end.

A couple days later now and about to dive back in with my buddy who’s still got the tag then off to Colorado to see what I can’t make happen over there. This 2026 season has been great to me so far, we’ll see what’s next🙏🏼

This crazy night doesn’t feel real. Made the decision to move spots at about 4pm and making the drive across the foothills to a new spot ive never hunted. On arrival the spot I wanted was taken so with day light falling I made the best with what I had and bumped down a road. Made the short hike in to a small clear cut. Made few small cow calls that cut the airs silence. Probably 20 minutes later out of the corner of my eye this muddy bull comes trotting in. He worked in to what I thought was 50 yards broadside but must of ranged wrong. I missed way under as he jumps and begins to run off. I quickly chirp and stop him. Mind you im in wide open sitting on a stump. Using my bow to cover my face he seems unafraid and comes back in. He plays the wind and starts cirling my left behind some brush. I climbed on the stump to get a better angle. He does a complete 180 from the first shot being to the north and now he is to my south. The bull walk towards me and stops if about to bolt. I range him at 40 yards trying to move as little as possible. Thinking my time is running out before he bolts i draw my bow staring him down. For what reason idk but he relaxes and turns broadside and start to look away. I tell myself “now is my time”. Settled my 40 pin and smacked him. Seeing my arrow as he bolts gave me a very uneasy feeling. It looked high and to much arrow showing. Forgetting in the moment im shooting from an elevated position the shot was on the money. Hit both longs but stopped in hide and probably catching a few ribs slowing it down but this is all hind site. I think a messed up after all these years of passing on good bulls waiting for a good shot. Missing the easy layup and letting my nerves get the best of me. The doubt hits hard as the sun is setting. I can hear crashing still in the timber. I start texting all the guys and kaylee. They start there way up the mountain. We wait for over an hour before tracking the blood trail into the dark timber. Its very faint not giving much hope. Continued in comments...
