Over the next few months we are going to share more about the artisans we work with and the type of baskets they create! Today we are featuring the weavers from Eswatini.
Eswatini is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Although only 120 miles long and 81 miles wide, this small country has a diverse climate and topography.
Baskets from Eswatini are handwoven from sisal fibers. Weavers take an average of 30 hours to create an 8 inch basket which makes these some of the most labor intensive of all African baskets.
Adding an inch in diameter at the top of a basket could actually take as long or longer than the first several inches as the base of the basket. Time taken to weave a larger Masterweave basket often exceeds 120 hours.
These baskets are intricate, masterfully made, and highly collectable.
