During the month of May, the Saint Louis Zoo is turning off our Zoo pylon lights to help migrating birds.
These feathered travelers tend to migrate at night when it's cool using stars and other celestial bodies as a guide. Unfortunately, bright outdoor lights pointed to the sky can confuse the birds and keep them from finding their way.
During peak migration times (10 p.m. – 6 a.m. from April to June and again in September to October), reducing artificial light is a great way to help more than 325 bird species that fly through our skies along the Mississippi Flyway.
Here’s a few ways to help:
🔸 Turn off bright unnecessary outdoor lights in areas like your porch, patio or garage.
🔸 When light is needed, use motion sensors or timers to prevent constant light.
🔸 Aim beams downward or shield bulbs to keep light out of the sky.
