60 years ago today-
August 21, 1966 was a remarkable day in St. Louis music history. The Beatles’ concert at the brand-new Busch Memorial Stadium was their one and only St. Louis appearance, and the rain-soaked show was part of their final North American tour.
They played 11 songs that night, and just four concerts remained on the tour:
August 23 — New York City
August 25 — Seattle
August 28 — Los Angeles
August 29 — San Francisco
That San Francisco performance at Candlestick Park became the Beatles’ final ticketed concert before they stopped touring. The next time they performed live as a group was the famous Apple Corps rooftop concert on January 30, 1969.
And there’s an especially great St. Louis detail: Busch Memorial Stadium had opened only a few months earlier, in May 1966, making the Beatles among the first major musical acts to perform there.
