Only four months until our 60th anniversary!

Gift items have been a staple at the Sign of the Arrow (SOA) since it opened in 1966. Many were created by local artists, seamstresses, and bakers on a consignment basis. One volunteer’s daughter even made ceramic pots in her high school class and sold them in the shop’s craft area. For many years, SOA also carried Arrowcraft items from Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Originally founded by Pi Beta Phi as a settlement school, Arrowmont later became a center for preserving traditional mountain crafts such as weaving, basketry, quilting, and woodworking.

Paper goods and cards have always been big sellers. The shop still features a rotating selection of note cards, gift bags, tissue paper, wrapping paper, napkins, guest towels, and calendars. Many customers say SOA has the best cards in town. One of the Founder’s daughters, and current volunteer, remembers sorting and matching cards for the shop when she was young.

In addition to the previously highlighted holiday gifts, SOA offers many other options. Housewarming gifts include dish towels, frames, and candles. For weddings or more formal occasions, the shop carries Beatriz Ball pieces and charcuterie accessories, from boards and recipe cards to knives. For a more personal gift, SOA also offers jewelry, handbags, and select clothing items. One jewelry line is created by local artist and Pi Beta Phi member Abby Keough. Hazel and Marie pearls are created by local artist, Katie Knapp Littlefield.

SOA also offers a wide range of home décor items, from pillows and door hangings to door mats and wreaths. Specialty soaps and lotions add a thoughtful touch to any bathroom. The shop also features a dedicated section of St. Louis and Missouri-themed items, including merchandise celebrating local sports teams—Go Cards, Go Blues, and Go StL City. There is also a collection of state and city glasses and towels. For college life, SOA carries Tervis tumblers and a variety of sorority items, including notepads and frames. And that is only the beginning…Come visit!

Thank you for supporting the shop’s mission to provide philanthropic outreach—over $4.1 million to date!!

Our 60th Anniversary in October is getting closer…

In the early years of Sign of the Arrow (SOA), needlepoint was sold as kits. Soon after the shop opened, Susan Rowe (a local Pi Beta Phi alum and shop volunteer) offered painted needlepoint canvas designs on consignment to the shop. The line was called Arrowpoint. When she passed away, she bequeathed her designs to SOA and various artists reproduced them. Arrowpoint stockings continue to be painted, stitched and finished today.

In 1972, SOA began its tradition of Limited Edition Christmas ornaments. The shop still has the charted pattern available for each one. The range of ornament subjects is vast and often reflects the styles of the time or events in SOA’s history. For example, the 1991 Limited Edition Christmas ornament has a ‘25’ on the angel’s trumpet commemorating the shop’s 25th Anniversary. As a unique gift item, most of the Limited Edition Christmas ornaments were photographed and made into a puzzle which is sold at the shop! In addition, an ornament was designed for SOA’s 50th Anniversary and one is being designed for the 60th.

One customer has stitched 33 of the possible 54 Limited Edition Christmas ornaments. How many have you finished?

In 2021, the first Halloween Limited Edition ornament was created - Mischievous Mike (a mummy). Annual creations since then are Victorious Victor (a vampire), Jazzy Joyce (a flapper), Wicked Wanda (a witch), and Mellow Mac (a monster). There are many other canvases that are exclusive to the Sign of the Arrow in collaboration with different designers and artists.

Your purchasing, stitching, and finishing these projects and many others has helped Sign of the Arrow donate over $4.1 million since 1966. Thank you!
