There are moments throughout this growing journey where I have felt genuinely touched. This past weekend was one of those times. Your oohing and ahhing over the varieties of flowers we have just fuels our spirits! We really appreciate all of you, and your enthusiasm for our flower-filled journey is infectiousSuch a really great weekend for the flowers! I love it when customers come to the booth and tell me how long their flowers last, so now I’m passing on a few little tips to get your flowers to last even longer!

Our flowers are still living and, as with all living things, they too need your interaction!
They like the same water you drink (clean!) Change the vase water often, every 2-3 days. Do it now, today!
Trim ½ - 1 inch off the bottoms of the stems twice per week so they can continue to drink. Remember to cut diagonally as this will provide your stems with the greatest surface area for taking up water.
I’ve been told people place their flowers in the refrigerator overnight as part of their bedtime routine and pull them out again as part of their morning routine. I think this is an excellent idea for consideration!
Place your flowers in a well-traveled area in your home. They are living, so they move and change! Seeing their ebb and flow gives you more of that calming, healing, beneficial energy they provide!
Come back to market, buy flowers, and start all over again!

Exiting news to share with the Urban Buds family! This month I, Miranda, was issued a US patent for my quiver-shaped, crossbody, adjustable flower bag design for the The Flower Bag Company When the notice came in you could have knocked me over with a flower petal. I had rather forgotten about the application if not the many months long process of creation, documentation, and fair trade verified manufacturing. And now, a patent! I felt—and feel—appreciated, proud, and humbled all at the same time. Thank you friends and family far and wide who encouraged this process and bought a bag or 10 💕

Come see us this Saturday Tower Grove Farmers' Market to be teleported to the flora and fauna fields of Hawaii! Tuberose, big, beautiful blooms native to central and southern Mexico, is often used as one of the main floral materials in Hawaiian leis. Their smell is not overly strong or overly sweet – it’s actually just perfect! This amazing aroma blends with the air particles and fills the room. What’s really fascinating about this plant is that it’s not as fragrant during the day, but after 5pm this baby lights up a room! When a flower becomes more fragrant at night, the process is called nocturnal scent emission, which is great for insects that can’t see or that find flowers to pollinate by scent rather than color. It’s also perfect for those of us who are working during the day and home at night! Last night I went out just to sit among the tuberose and I feel like I’m still riding that heavenly high! Tuberose and so many other beautiful flowers will be available Saturday at the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market and Sunday The Boulevard Farmers’ Market So many Long lasting, absolutely unique cool blooms await you this weekend!! See you soon!!

We’ve been getting lots of questions about our Curcuma also known as Siam Tulips. First a little bit of botany. These tropical plants, we are calling “flowers” are actually modified leaves called bracts. That form little cups at the top of the stem. Inside these bracts The small delicate flower blooms.
We grow these corms in a very hot greenhouse watered on drip irrigation.
So how does these bracts get filled with water? It’s one of the really interesting phenomenon about these plants. My understanding that the water serve as protection so that the delicate flower does not dry out and prevents insects that can’t swim! It also has a role in pollination. The water & plant sap attracts butterflies, bees who are in search of water and while drinking pollinate the plant! Cool, right?

We have been pouring this water out during harvest, but in further research, I’ve read that keeping the water in them. They can last 2 to 3 weeks instead of the 10 days. We are currently running an experiment with one that has no water and the other we added water much like you would do at home. Will we will report our finds. With harvesting and the short 2 mile trek to market it’s hard to imagine not losing the water. We’re good ,we’re not that good!

For maximum stem length we harvest the stems by “pulling” them. This gives us more stem length by pulling parts of the stem, that clipper could never reach. Demonstrated in the photos above. We will have these amazing flowers and more tomorrow Tower Grove Farmers' Market and Sunday The Boulevard Farmers’ Market We love your curiosity!
if you can add more let’s talk about it in the comments! See you this weekend!

I’ve found social media difficult for a few months now, but it’s a necessary evil for a small business. My mom died in September. And for now, it’s stunted my joy and enthusiasm. I always want to be authentic here, and I just don’t have the upbeat and exciting energy that I think business social media expects. In the years that I’ve been on Instagram, I’ve only heard 2 people talk openly about their personal struggle with depression – years ago, and I’ve never forgotten it. Thank you Michael Genovese . & Karl Vahrmeyer Karl Vahrmeyer Jr. . So I am attempting to keep it real here. I’m fine and also on the struggle bus. I’m telling you this because I want relief from feeling the pressure of posting. I got into flower farming to farm flowers, not to be a brand and content manager. Just because I’m quiet doesn’t mean things aren’t the same on the farm. My dad always said “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” so here’s all the good stuff we’ve got going on:

We’re in the hot dog days of summer. The flowers are gorgeous and somehow after growing 30+ years, the flower seasons becomes predictable. Yes, the lisianthus are going to bloom in July, along with the zinnias. Celosia will come in strong. It’s just the cycle. I’m constantly looking for something that’s different. Keeping things interesting, stimulating and fresh. Understand it can’t just be anything! It’s got to have a 5+ day vase life, be non-toxic to pets and humans, and play well with the current ensemble, and fits well into our farm rotation. Thai tulips (Curcuma), Pineapple Lily (Eucomis), and a relatively new species of cut flower petunias, checks all of our boxes!! – more to come!
Our flowers come direct from the farm, no pit stop, no middle person. grown right here in “Your” back yard in the middle of the city of Saint Louis, lovingly cared for by people you know and apart of our STL community! Come visit us Saturday Tower Grove Farmers' Market 8-12:30 and Sunday The Boulevard Farmers’ Market 9-1.
