“The river was our source of drinking water, but as the pollution increased, we started to see its effects,” Chief B recalled. “Cholera outbreaks became common.”
For the chief and his people living in the Mokobo community in Sierra Leone, they had no choice but to collect water from the river—the same place that families openly defecated.
When Living Water Sierra Leone partnered with community leaders in Mokobo, they invited those in the community to participate in a sanitation and hygiene program.
“The hygiene promoters from our community helped us realize the importance of proper sanitation.” Chief B said. “We learned how to build latrines and keep our community clean.”
Alongside the sanitation program, a complex water system was installed—providing safe drinking water for every household.
“We no longer have to walk miles to fetch water,” Chief B gratefully said. “Now, we have safe water right here in our community.”
