Buzzards Bay Light, standing watch on her legs offshore. You never forget your first tower rounding, day or pitch-black night, clear skies or fog rolling in thick. Every rounding is its own story. And it really doesn't matter whether its the old or new one. When was yours, and who rounded the old school Texas Tower before she came down in 1996?

On this day, August 19, 1812, the USS *Constitution* earned the nickname that has endured for more than two centuries: “Old Ironsides.”

During her battle with HMS Guerriere, British cannonballs were seen bouncing off USS Constitution stout white oak hull, prompting a sailor to reportedly exclaim, “Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!”

USS Constitution went on to defeat Guerriere, securing her place in American naval history.

On Aug. 19, 1812, USS Constitution secured a decisive victory over HMS Guerriere off the coast of Nova Scotia during the War of 1812.

During the fierce engagement, British cannon fire failed to pe*****te Constitution’s thick wooden hull, inspiring the legendary nickname “Old Ironsides.”

After an intense exchange of fire, Guerriere was left severely damaged and forced to surrender.

Too badly damaged to be taken as a prize, the British frigate was abandoned and later set ablaze.

Constitution’s triumph strengthened the resolve of a young nation and became one of the U.S. Navy’s most celebrated victories.

More than two centuries later, USS Constitution and her crew proudly carry forward the fighting spirit and enduring legacy of Old Ironsides.

Eight Bells: John Rousmaniere, 1944–2026

Landfall Navigation joins the sailing community in remembering John Rousmaniere, accomplished offshore sailor, author, historian and influential advocate for safety at sea.

His experience aboard Toscana during the disastrous 1979 Fastnet Race led to his landmark 1980 book, Fastnet, Force 10. More than an account of the tragedy, the book helped sailors better understand the importance of preparation, seamanship and sound judgment at sea. Rousmaniere went on to help create US Sailing's Safety at Sea program and spent decades sharing those lessons with sailors.

That legacy is deeply intertwined with Landfall's own history and mission. For many years, our team has supported US Sailing's Safety at Sea programs with onsite consulting at numerous Safety at Sea Seminars, with particular focus during Newport Bermuda Race years. Rousmaniere's belief that preparation, proper equipment, seamanship and good judgment can save lives closely reflects Landfall's mission and our continued commitment to helping sailors prepare for going offshore.

Perhaps one of his most personal lessons came later in life. At 74, Rousmaniere asked himself whether he still had the strength and stamina he would expect of a crewmember standing an offshore watch. When he concluded that he did not, he stepped away from offshore sailing. It was a difficult decision, but one entirely consistent with the principles he had spent a lifetime teaching, and a fitting reminder that a capable crew is among the most important components of any offshore race boat.

Fair winds, John Rousmaniere. Your contributions to sailing and safety at sea will continue to serve sailors for generations to come.

The future of sailing was on full display this week during the JSA of LIS FEVA Championship at Stamford Yacht Club with over 50 registered boats vying for the win.

Landfall was proud to support this outstanding event and congratulate all of the competitors for their hard work, sportsmanship, seamanship, and determination.
