I am contemplating a substantial purchase of equipment. To do a very small, specialized task.

I became obsessed with the product after reading the product description.

And that made me very nervous.

I am very cautious about obsessive thought cycles (by obsessive thought cycles I mean: the pattern of returning to the same subject matter, involuntarily, without the addition of new information.)

I was drawn to the machine.

That attraction put me on guard.

The machine appealed to two of my strongest predilections.

First, I like mechanical things that are well-designed and utilitarian. This machine appeared to check both of those boxes.

Second, it spoke directly to a core philosophical principle. I frame the cost side of a cost-benefit analysis in a very specific currency: the seconds of my life.

When I say it spoke directly to this principle, I am referring to a phrase in the product description: "time poor user."

It is rare that marketing "speaks" to me. Maybe my immunity derives from my inherent cynicism. Or maybe I’m not the target audience.

In this case, I was not immune.

I am a "time poor user". The seconds of my life are scarce, and the ways that I want to spend them are abundant.

Cerakote HIR Series.

For those who coat things for reasons best described as "Other".

Personally, I don't even know the intended application of the HIR series.

Picked up some 'tester sizes' to see how the colors work out in real time.

Coyote Tan
ADF Light Brown
Sold Leaf Green (The big unknown! Greens make or break the project. I usually spray Noveski Green in H series, because it works so well with the go-to-palate I use.)
Desert Sand
Flat Dark Earth (I'm curious about similarity to Magpuls FDE that's been part of our go to patterns for quite a few years.)

-HYPOTHESIS: #1 mechanical factor for repeatable field ACCURACY over diverse ammo is receiver fitment.
-This upper (unknown origin) was hand-fit to this lower( ), and upper face was squared off on the lathe.
-NEXT: prep barrel and fit bolt… then barrel install (shim to thermal fit tolerances)… then fire hone… then accuracy testing.

What is important to you?

What tools and consumables do you need to take care of what is important to you?

What skills do you need to take care of what's important to you?

Do you have an inventory/checklist/inspection protocol for the things that support your priorities?

Do you have the knowledge you need to even know what you need?

The (pretty random) picture that accompanies this post is of the top of the gas key attached to an AR15 bolt carrier.

I would say that it needs to be staked more aggressively (i.e. the indents at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock need to be deeper to create an interference with the screws to insure they do not back out under use), and for good measure I'd counter punch them as well (deform the metal on the side of the indents on the counterclockwise side of the indents).

These details radically decrease the possibility of a catastrophic failure of (this part) the system. I use some specialized tooling to accomplish these tasks. At home, you could probably accomplish the posting with a flat head screw driver and a hammer.

I'm not much of a mechanic, but I can make sure my washer fluid is topped off... that my wiper blades are in good shape... that my coolant levels and oil are where they need to be.

Are you taking a few minutes out of the week to think about what's important and verify that you have the basics covered?
