This season is setting up to be nothing short of phenomenal! With the recent moisture we’ve had (and likely more on the way), conditions are just about optimal for safe usage and loads of entertainment!!

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) shows drought conditions across our great state, and all three of our locations show very low to moderate. I’ve included a screenshot of the most recent update (7-3-24) to the KBDI in the photos below, and you can also follow the link or copy/paste to the website here:

That being said, we always reinforce that safety is paramount!! Remember to follow instructions located on each firework item, and to use precautions. Generally speaking, if you light the fuse then are responsible for whatever happens next.

To that end, we generally recommend a non-exhaustive list of things to consider:

🎆 Have a water supply or fire extinguisher handy.

🎆 Make sure you have spotters watching fallout of aerials and maintain a safe distance between your crowd and firing zone.

🎆 Never use fireworks in a manner inconsistent with the product instructions.

🎆 Alcohol (or any intoxicants for that matter) and fireworks don’t mix. Full S T O P 🛑. Please be responsible; if you’ve had too much then promote yourself from igniter to spectator, sit back & enjoy the show. 😁

🎆 Be considerate of fur-babies. Give a heads up to pet owners in proximity to your shooting location so that they can be prepared. Some animals love fireworks, some really, REALLY don’t, and others are meh. Be kind - it’s pretty simple.

It’s gearing up to be a great New Year’s Eve, folks!!! Come see us at our Stephenville store and our Hamilton locations for all of your pyrotechnic needs! We’ll be open until 11 tonight and from 8 AM through 1 AM tomorrow!

The weather is beautiful and the drought index is very low. This is absolutely optimal weather for bringing in the New Year with a 💥 BANG 💥!!!!

Howdy y'all, I hope your summer is off to a great start! We are very excited to open all three of our locations this season (Stephenville, Hamilton & Abilene). Tomorrow is opening day! Please see specific location hours referenced at the end of this post.

What a difference a year makes regarding the weather! I'm reminded of a saying about our great state that I often quote: If you don't like the weather in Texas, just wait a few minutes.

Looking back on the drought conditions we were facing last year at this time, it certainly leaves me feeling grateful to enjoy the abundance of our Creator's blessings through His provision of precipitation. I've said it before; we need rain for WAY more important reasons than shooting fireworks, but we're happy to enjoy it just the same. Shoot me a message if you have any questions about conditions in our service areas. I can provide resources that have proven helpful for most. Although I'm not that active on social media most of the time, I'm pretty quick to respond during our selling seasons. 😁

We look forward to seeing you this season, and we hope you have a BLAST (see what I did there) enjoying our products. Of course we always want to remind everyone to exercise caution when setting off fireworks; they are safe to use given that instructions are followed, precautions are taken & the folks lighting the fuses are of reasonably sober mind. Remember folks, responsible use of our products now means that we'll continue to be able to use them in the future. Please make good choices and have a great time!!!

Howdy, folks. Blake here.

This fireworks season is setting up perfectly for shooting conditions for most of Texas, and our areas are not excluded. The weather will be mild today and pristine tomorrow, which is just about all we can ask for at New Years. Wind shouldn’t be much of a factor, and the KBDI (Keetch-Byram Drought Index, linked here: https://sslarcims3.tamu.edu/KBDI/) shows that Erath, Hamilton & Taylor counties all are at safe levels. If you take a gander at the color-coded map, the cliff notes are: Blue = Phenomenal, Aqua = Great, Green = Good.

In short, low drought levels and low wind combined with fair temperatures provide a perfect opportunity to enjoy the use of our products in a safe, fun manner. We might not see conditions like this at New Years for a long time. We still have plenty of product at our 3 locations, so whether you’re in Stephenville, Hamilton or Abilene come early and stock up on as much pyrotechnic power as you can carry out the door. And don’t worry, if you can’t stop there we’ll be happy to assist you. 😁

Looking at the conditions now, it’s crazy to think that just a few months ago we couldn’t even open our doors due to the extreme dry weather. What a difference a little time and moisture can make. We are abundantly thankful for the provision of rain from our Creator. While so many people needed it for so many more important things than the sale of our products, we’d be remiss if we didn’t stop and say a prayer of thanks for His blessings, including the light rain that many of us will be getting today.

As always, please use our products carefully. They are absolutely safe to use provided instructions are followed and precautions are taken. Keeping a safe distance away, having water and towels on hand, and avoiding excessive amounts of libations while using our products are just a few good ideas to keep your fun experience from turning into a bad night. Responsible use today means we’ll continue to have the opportunity to enjoy our products in the future. Please do your part.

IMPORTANT UPDATE ----- NO FIREWORK SALES/USE EFFECTIVE 6-29-2022

Erath county is now under a disaster declaration that specifically prohibits, amongst other things, the sale and use of consumer grade class 1.4G fireworks. Accordingly, Matt & Blake’s Fireworks will not be opening this year in Erath county. My understanding is that the firework use ban will extend as long as the county is under a general burn ban.

We voluntarily delayed our opening this season to July 1st, but I realize that some other vendors have been open for several days. If you have purchased any fireworks this season or have any leftover fireworks in your possession from previous seasons, PLEASE do not discharge them until the general burn ban is lifted. Violating this order could result in loss to property and potential fines.

The reckless use of fireworks represents a threat to the ability of the public to have access to them in future seasons. If we can’t act responsibly now, we might forfeit the privilege of enjoying them going forward. Please do the right thing, folks.

I am in complete support of the emergency order. I appreciate our county officials waiting to see if the recent cool front would yield enough moisture to give this season a chance, but they have determined that the current conditions are too dangerous to risk any additional contributing factors. A few of our county commissioners serve as firefighters, and they worked Sunday to assist with several newly erupted fires. They understand the risk factors and I believe that they have made a good decision.

Obviously, the current situation hurts us as a business, but profits and the bottom-line pale in comparison to the damage that could result from even a few reckless uses of our products. I would never want that and am glad to see that safety is the chief concern of our county officials. We love this community, and we love being a part of it. We hope to see everyone back at the store at New Year’s; and we hope that weather conditions look drastically different at that time. Thanks for all of you that have supported us over the years and for those that have supported us over the past few days.

TO ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS – PLEASE READ

I want to address the current drought conditions and the sale and use of consumer fireworks. I hope to share some helpful information and perspective. I was contacted on Tuesday by Tommy Shelton, Fire Marshall for Erath County. We had a constructive conversation regarding the current weather conditions, and he had two requests for me:

1 – He asked that we voluntarily remove rockets and missiles from our shelves. I agreed, and I let him know that I had already made the decision to do so last week.

2 – He asked that we voluntarily choose to shorten our sales window from June 24th – July 4th to July 1st-4th. I agreed, and I hope that all of the other vendors in Erath County will do the same.

I appreciate Tommy for coming directly to me. He believes that it would help the county’s situation for me to meet these requests, and I agree. As a business owner in this community, I want to do my part to be an advocate for consumer & public safety. I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight the responsibility of every firework consumer to exercise safety and caution when using fireworks. Our products are safe to use when the directions and proper precautions are followed. If you light the fuse, you generally have the responsibility for whatever comes next. I can’t stress enough the importance of being careful.

Here are a few helpful suggestions to that end:

1 – Find an optimal location, ideally with a group of people. For me, this would be land with very little or no vegetation. If someone in your group has property that fits that description, I suggest having the celebration at his/her place. A large group of people is also helpful in watching for any potential spark-ups on low vegetation.

2 – Have PLENTY of water on hand. Read that again.

It helps to thoroughly soak the shoot location, even if there is very little vegetation. If you have access to one, a rechargeable fire extinguisher is a good option.

3 – If you wouldn’t drink and drive, you probably shouldn’t drink and use our products. In either scenario you generally end up being responsible for the consequences. Make good decisions, folks; no one benefits from recklessness. Mr. Shelton made it clear to me that he would be issuing tickets for reckless behavior for fires resulting from fireworks usage.

4 – Mind the wind conditions and humidity, and be prepared to postpone your fireworks fun if necessary. Our products are safe to use, but windy conditions combined with low humidity can quickly turn a situation from a harmless one into a dangerous one.

5 – If you have a product malfunction as a dud, please don’t try to light it with unconventional methods. Soak the product with water immediately. If you bought it from us, please send us a message. We happily issue refunds for any returned duds.

If you're the praying kind, please add rain to your prayer list if you haven't already. To be clear, there are WAY more important reasons than firework usage for our land to need rain, but an added bonus would be additional safety during this time.

We care about this community, and we appreciate all the support that you have given to us over the years; it’s hard to believe that this is our 16th 4th of July in Stephenville. We are happy to say that despite the national fireworks shortage, we were able to get fully STOCKED for this selling season.

However…once we are sold out we will have ZERO opportunity to get any more inventory until the New Year selling season. 😳😳😳
