Still have the same barley straw in your pond that you put in this spring? It may be time for a fresh bale.

Barley straw is one of our top selling pond care products for a reason. It’s a simple way to help prevent new algae growth naturally, but it doesn’t last forever.

If your barley straw has been working since early spring, fall is the time to replace it. Waiting until next spring can leave your pond without the prevention it needs heading into the next algae season.

Our newest Pond Resource Guide breaks down exactly when to replace barley straw, how it works, and whether a barley straw bale or liquid barley extract is right for your pond.

Before you put it off until spring, check your barley. Then read the guide and get your next treatment ready.

Woke up to green, cloudy water and wondering what happened? That's usually planktonic algae, microscopic cells floating right in the water column that can spread through an entire pond in a matter of days. It feeds on nutrients, leaves, fish waste, runoff from nearby lawns, so the more of that sitting in your water, the worse a bloom can get.

The fix depends on what you're working with. Cutrine Plus Liquid is our go to for clearing it fast, or Green Clean Granular if you've got koi, goldfish, or trout that need a gentler option. Just don't treat the whole pond at once, a big bloom dying off all together pulls oxygen out of the water fast and can put your fish at risk, so work in sections and give it a couple weeks between each.

Late summer is actually the best time of year to get rid of cattails, and most people don’t realize it.

Cattails naturally pull nutrients down into their root system to store for winter starting right about now, which means treating them during this window carries the herbicide straight down to the roots instead of just knocking back what you can see above the water.

We recommend Clearcast for cattail and shoreline control, and we ship it right to your door nationwide.

Our full breakdown covers it here: https://thepondshop.com/blogs/the-pond-shop-blog/how-do-i-get-rid-of-cattails
