I don't get many days off to fish, but this cold and windy Sunday gave me an excuse to get out there! It wasn't the hottest fishing day, but all it takes is one to make it all better.

The idea of a sign with a boat platform has been a work in progress for almost a year. Today our friends Joe and Nick at came through with this sweet Madison! More to come for our inaugural Halloween edition 🎃

Fall fishing is taking over in Western Montana.

Cold mornings are pushing the better fishing later into the day, so there’s no reason to be on the water at first light right now. Our best window this week is roughly 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

October Caddis, BWOs, Mahogany Duns, Hecubas, and streamers are becoming the main players, while ants, beetles, and a few hoppers are still producing during the warmer afternoons.

The Bitterroot is our best overall bet this week, with a good mix of fall dries, dry-dropper fishing, and improving streamer opportunities.

A few important notes:
No current hoot-owl restrictions on our core western Montana rivers.
The Blackfoot remains closed to floating from Weigh Station FAS downstream to I-90.
Rock Creek remains wade-fishing only under its seasonal boat restriction.

If I were fishing this week, I’d sleep in a little, hit the Bitterroot around 10:00, carry October Caddis and BWOs, and keep a streamer rod ready for clouds, wind, or showers.

We'll be closing early today (3PM) to support the Ravalli County Sheriff's Office Shop With A Cop fundraiser in Hamilton. Here are the details if you want to show your support!

Date & Time: Saturday, September 26, 2026, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: Hamilton City Hall, 223 S. 2nd St, Hamilton, MT
Cost: $10 admission (includes a rib sample plate and two sides)
Activities: BBQ rib cook-off competition (pork, beef, and a new "wild card" category with cash prizes)
Live music by the band Shodown and tunes from a local DJ
Live auction and raffle - If it's anything like last year, there are some AMAZING items up for grabs!!

September 11, 2001

Today, we remember the 2,977 lives lost 25 years ago.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, first responders, service members, and ordinary Americans who ran toward danger when every instinct told them to run away.

We remember the families who lost someone they loved, and those who still carry the weight of that day.

And we remember what followed. For a brief time, differences seemed smaller. Neighbors helped neighbors. Strangers looked after one another. We were reminded that, despite everything that divides us, we are Americans first.

Twenty-five years later, that lesson is still worth remembering.

From all of us at Lightweight Fly Shop, we honor those we lost, those who served, and those who continue to carry their memory.

Never forget. 9/11/2001.
