Went out on Monday with my good friend Mark Hogan from Hogie baits. Got on the water around 10 am. Started up the South Fork river a good long ways. went part Brush creek and on a bit past Long Branch.
About another mile or so up in South Fork.
Water clarity was a bit cleaner but still a bit stained.
We fished several brush piles in the river channel and the stumps lining the banks of the South Fork. All with little or diminished success. Although the day was a bit long we managed to stay focused on the task before us, that is catching some quality fish. After several hours on a solid spanking we realized that we had very little bait fish around us, no birds diving on the shad.
We went down the river a short distance, found a few schools of bait fish but unfortunately had the same results.
Sometime during the day your mind is racing to the inevitable fact that you just don’t know everything! And it’s days like this that humble you back to reality.
But fortunately for ma I had two great companions to laugh with and help maintain your spirits as you methodically dissect a brush pile.
Just couldn’t get any kind of pattern to work.
We shallow then deep the against the bluff by the bank , tried the flats nothing mattered cause nothing worked.
Vey few fish were interested!
However it was still a good day. The wind was very heavy handed and tried to dictate our approach but we managed to hang with it.
On days like this the really tough days you have to adjust your expectations, cause prevailing conditions will lead you and hold into their own reality. That is to say there are certain things you just can’t do and some things you can’t do well that’s just how it is.
And that’s the effect it has on us , apparently the negative effects on the fish were much greater. Just couldn’t get the active or even interested!
At the end of the day we were a long long way from a limit. But the day was great not because of the fishing but the comrades that I shared the boat with , kinda played back laughing and joking and after all that’s a great well to look back on the day and fill your soul and heart with happiness!
Thank you Mark Hogan and Mark from Florida. Great times and good friends!!
