When someone is struggling with mobility, it's easy to assume a diagnosis alone is enough to justify the need for a power wheelchair. Medicare, however, looks for more than a diagnosis alone.

The documentation needs to show how the person's mobility limitation affects daily activities at home, why a cane, walker, manual wheelchair, or — when relevant — a scooter does not adequately meet those needs, and why the recommended power mobility device is medically necessary.

The process may also include a qualifying face-to-face encounter, a written order, supporting medical records, and — depending on the equipment — a specialty evaluation or prior authorization.

Every situation is unique, and completing the documentation process does not guarantee Medicare coverage or payment.

No single spot on your body should be taking all the pressure.
