This fine viola bow by American maker Randy L. Steenburgen is crafted from a round stick of choice red-brown pernambuco and elegantly mounted in gold. The ebony frog features gold mountings and Parisian eyes, complemented by an ebony adjuster with two gold bands and a pearl end dot. Steenburgen’s distinctive gold and leather thumb grip completes the refined presentation. Weighing 70.5 grams, the bow is perfectly balanced and exceptionally stable in the hand. It plays beautifully, offering excellent control, responsiveness, and security across the strings. The bow remains in excellent condition.

We are pleased to present this fine violin by Vincenzo Postiglione for examination, trial, and purchase.
This exceptional Vincenzo Postiglione violin, made in Naples circa 1910, bears a label of Lorenzo Ventapane dated 1827. The two-piece, quarter-cut maple back has deep, narrow flames ascending toward the center joint, complemented by matching ribs and a scroll of plainer maple. Particularly striking is the two-piece spruce top, with abundant hazel-spruce figure throughout. A rich red-brown varnish over a luminous golden ground gives the violin tremendous visual character. In excellent condition, it is equally impressive tonally, producing a rich, resonant sound with remarkable clarity, depth, and presence.

A devastating loss for the string community.

A fire has destroyed the home of cellist and teacher Tanya Carey and her husband, flutist Gerald Carey. Among the many instruments, music, recordings, and personal belongings lost was Tanya’s 1704 Guarneri cello, an irreplaceable piece of musical history.

Thankfully, Tanya and Gerald are safe, but they now face the difficult task of rebuilding their lives and replacing what can be replaced.

A fundraiser has been established to help the Carey family with immediate expenses and their recovery. We encourage our friends in the musical community to read their story and consider supporting or sharing the fundraiser.

We are pleased to present this fine cello by Lorenzo & Tomaso Carcassi circa 1770 for examination, trial, and purchase.

A superb Florentine cello by Lorenzo and Tomasso Carcassi, made circa 1770. The two-piece back is of beautifully quartered maple with even, narrow flames descending toward the center joint, with original wings added to the lower bouts by the makers. The ribs and scroll are of deeper, narrowly flamed maple. The four-piece spruce top also incorporates original wings and displays straight grain of varying widths. The varnish is a clear golden-orange over a luminous golden ground.

In excellent condition, this is an exceptionally fine example with remarkable playing qualities. Its slightly petite dimensions make it unusually comfortable and effortless to handle. The sound is rich, expansive, and highly resonant, with tremendous depth and warmth in the bass and a lyrical, singing quality in the upper register. Powerful without sacrificing refinement, the cello responds beautifully across the entire range and offers the depth, color, and character expected of a great 18th-century Italian instrument.

This gold-mounted violin bow by Georges Tepho combines power and agility. Tepho crafted the round stick from choice pernambuco and finished it with an ebony and faux ivory faceplate. The ebony frog features large pearl eyes and elegant gold mountings. An ebony adjuster with two gold rings and a pearl end dot completes the fittings, while a gold tinsel winding and leather thumb grip round out the bow’s design.

We are pleased to present this fine violin by Francesco Maurizi for examination, trial, and purchase.

A stunning Italian violin made in Appignano circa 1885 and bearing a label reading “Jacobo Brandini.”

The one-piece back is fashioned from slab-cut maple with attractive, irregular flames. The ribs and scroll are of matching maple. The two-piece spruce top displays straight, narrow grain throughout. A warm orange-brown varnish over a golden ground gives the violin a rich and inviting appearance.

The violin has a lovely, warm tonal character with excellent clarity and an easy response. Comfortable and approachable to play, it offers a pleasing combination of warmth, definition, and responsiveness.
