LA's Central Library is a pyramid-topped, mural-filled architectural icon built at a time when Los Angeles was betting big on its own future. That bet paid off. Nearly a million books and periodicals, one of the largest collections in the country, all housed inside a building that was designed to feel less like a bureaucratic reading room and more like a monument to the idea that everyone in this city deserves access to knowledge.
It's also a survivor. A devastating 1986 fire tore through the stacks and could have ended the story right there. Instead, the city rallied, rebuilt, and reopened it better than before. A hundred years later, it's still standing proudly at 5th and Flower.
