Here’s the 2nd part to the indigo extraction! After the leaves ferment, they get pulled out and discarded. The water gets aerated and hydrated lime is added to raise the pH and flocculate the indigo so it falls out of solution. Then decant and save the pigment!

I know, I know… it’s another post about goldenrod. But I can’t get enough of this amazing plant & brilliant color. Here it is being used to dye quilting cotton. So vibrant!

This was a raw CVM sheep fleece I bought from a woman on the west coast. California Variegated Mutant (CVM) sheep are a rare breed listed as “threatened” by the Livestock Conservancy. A single animal can have many different colors of wool, as seen here. Their wool is fine, soft & bouncy, and I loved working with this fleece. The video shows steps as I worked it from raw wool straight off the sheep to clean, handspun yarn.

One of the things I love to do is buy a wool fleece straight off the sheep. It’s an amazing way to learn about the properties of a wool sheep breed. But — it requires several steps before you get to the spinning yarn stage. Step 1. wash & scour.

Sometimes… I dye something hideous 😂But that’s just the way it goes, because without experimentation you may not stumble...

Kind of a dull photo, but it’s a behind the scenes step in my process. My favorite way to heat up a dyed piece after ice melt — stick it in a plastic bag and place it in the sun outside. This creates a greenhouse effect and it gets hot quick, all for free thanks to the sun. Really helps with blues!
