It’s that time of year when the asters and goldenrod begin to bloom.

When we were packing up to leave Nova Scotia last week, I was struck by the fields surrounding us.

Great sweeps of goldenrod, punctuated by tansy, with tiny white asters scattered throughout and the occasional flicker of lilac.

From the car window, they blurred together like a painting.

Yellow, cream, green and violet, as we began the long journey home, across the ferry and back to Upstate New York.

There is something about these late-summer wildflowers that always makes me a little emotional.

They arrive just as everything else is beginning to fade.

The garden is a little wilder.

The grasses are taller.

The cornflowers are disappearing.

The mornings are cooler and suddenly you find yourself reaching for woolly socks and thinking about putting the kettle on.

And then there are the Asters.

Along with goldenrod, asters are one of the great markers of the changing season.
