Finding equipment for you "in-betweener" pony can be a challenge!!

What is an "in-betweener" pony? This is what we call the 44 – 48″ pony. These are the ponies who are too large for the mini and small pony size, but not quite big enough for the large pony size. It might even be a pony who needs a combo of those sizes, as we know ponies come in many different shapes and sizes.

We have a special sized harness (that is custom and not kept in stock!) for this size pony as they are right between the Small Pony/Shetland harness and the Large Pony harness.

Since they need a special harness size they often don’t fit in the small pony vehicle, they are just a bit too big for them, and they don’t fit into a large pony cart, as they are too small for those ones!

We often recommend people to take a look at the Bellcrown vehicles as they have a few that are adjustable. Being able to adjust how long the shafts are as well as how high the seat is, is helpful when trying to fit a pony that isn’t small and isn’t large. The Badger and The Phantom are two models that are worth checking out!

As for a simple easy entry cat, Working Horse Tack offers the EZ Entry Medium Pony Cart. They are labeled as fitting “medium ponies” 42″-50″ ponies.

For marathon style carriages there are a few options that we’ve found, including the Pony Batmobile, the Kutzman brand Micro Fox, and last but definitely not least – The KBike/Cart! This wonderful vehicle is so adjustable it can be used with a 32″ mini up to a 46″ pony. We recommend not using it for ponies taller than 46″.

How do you know if your breeching body is fitting your equine’s rear end correctly? Let's talk about it!

First off, a harness is meant to be hitched to a vehicle pulling weight. Seeing it laid on an equine that is tied up, and not hitched to a set of shafts, pulling weight, will make things look different than when it’s actually working. Keep that in mind as your fitting your harness!

Mindy says: "Personally, I like it when the breeching body reaches from the center of the flank swirl, around the widest part of the rump, to the middle of the flank swirl on the other side. Donkeys are a little different since they don’t have a flank swirl. This measurement will require “eyeing” that spot between their belly and their hind leg."

The breeching is too small when the rings can’t reach the flank swirl, but the most important thing to note is the buckle placement for the hip straps. When the breeching body is too short those buckles are too far back – close to the top of the tail. This means you can not get those hip straps to lay nicely at the top of the hip but they sit too far back, close to the tail.

People will often contact us saying their breeching is too big because it’s droopy or floppy. This is because the hold back straps are not attached to the shafts, helping to hold the back of the breeching in place. A breeching that is fitting correctly can still look droopy or floppy when it’s just laying on the horse.

So, if your breeching body is a bit droopy when you are fitting your new harness, but the breeching rings reach the flank swirl and your hip straps are hanging over the top of the hip, then your breeching probably fits just fine. If you can’t raise your breeching body so it is sitting in the roundest, widest part of the equine’s rump, then you may need shorter hip straps.

When there are hold back straps attached to the breeching rings, then wrapped around the shafts in the correct fashion, the breeching body will sit in the correct spot and not droop.

If you are driving a donkey you do NOT raise the breeching body to the widest part of the rump as they tend to have pointy rear ends and the breeching will not sit there well. In that case, you need to have the breeching body right below that spot on their hip.

A Note from Mindy:

If you have that fancy Google Voice or Call Screen on your phone and it says something like, "They can't talk right now"... it will immediately hang up on me and I can't leave a voicemail. If I can't leave a voicemail then you won't know I have tried to call you back. This is happening at least once a day when I am trying to return phone calls.

Moral of the story, if you have this feature please be sure it is set up to allow for voicemails. Or know I will not be able to call you back.
