Ever reel a snapper up from 60 feet and watch it hit the surface bloated, eyes bulging, belly up? That's barotrauma — expanded gas, not the hook. And a fish that can't swim back down usually doesn't make it. A descending device fixes it: clip the fish on, send it back to depth, and pressure recompresses the gas on the way down. The Southeast now requires one aboard for snapper and grouper, and the Gulf rules aren't going anywhere. We broke down what barotrauma actually does to a fish, how venting compares to descending, what the devices cost (the Shelton runs $12.99, SeaQualizers about $100), the 16-ounce minimum and 60-foot release rule, plus how to rig one on gear you already carry — including a milk crate. NOAA's tagging work says it matters: bocaccio survive around 90 percent of the time, cowcod only about 50.

Save this one before your next deep drop, and share it with the buddy who still floats rockfish.

How deep is deep drop fishing? Short answer: it's a band, not a number. Most recreational boats are working somewhere between 300 and 1,500 feet — and the thing that usually sets your ceiling isn't the fish. It's how much line your reel holds and how much lead the current makes you hang. Once you're past 300 feet, everything downstream changes: the sounder needs its low-frequency element, the rig becomes a paternoster with enough weight to hold bottom, the hooks should be non-offset circle hooks, and a descending device belongs on deck before the first release. We broke down the depth bands, the reels and their published capacities, the sinker weights, and the Gulf and South Atlantic rules that shift with depth — plus where a given setup genuinely stops.

Save this before your next offshore run, and share it with the fishing partner who owns the electric reel.

Golden tilefish aren't roaming a reef — they're at an address. Hundreds of feet down on the outer shelf break, sitting in burrows in the mud, and the whole game is getting bait to that spot, holding it there, and reading the drift so you can do it again.

The new guide runs the sequence in order: the permit and 24-hour reporting rules for private boats north of the NC/VA line, why your braid and leader diameters aren't even close (and why that join is worth practising on the dock), why bigger hooks don't catch bigger tilefish, and the sinker call you make by watching the angle of the line rather than reading a chart.

Plus a drift-marking habit that keeps a small spot alive: plot the mark where the rig first loads, not where the boat started drifting.

Read the full deep-drop guide and save it for your next canyon trip.

Do deep drop lights work? Honest answer: sometimes, and it depends on what's on the end of the line. A 2022 review of LED fishing lights found catch rates shifting by species — blue and white pulled mantis shrimp and swimming crab, while other fish either ignored the light or moved off it entirely. Same light, opposite results.

That's why blue and green get the nod over red and white. Red is gone within the first few feet of water; blue and green are still visible down where your bait actually is. But a light doesn't fix your drop weight, your leader or a bite that's already gone quiet.

The only verdict that counts comes off your own boat. Fish a lit rig and a bare rig on the same drift, matching leader, hook and weight, and log every drop — depth, species, clarity, current. A season of that beats a forum argument every time.

Save this before your next offshore trip and run the lit-vs-bare test yourself.
